Despite each day bringing news of another celebrity break up, some stars do manage to stay the distance when it comes to love and marriage. WJ takes a look at some of the longest-lasting A-list relationships...

The super-successful couple have weathered good times and bad and in May announced that they are expecting a new addition to their family.

Instead of a huge showbiz wedding, the couple ‘eloped' and were married on September 12, 1991 in a midnight ceremony at the Hotel De Crillon, Paris.

Their son, Jett was born in 1992, but sadly died last year from seizure disorder while the family were holidaying in the Bahamas. A daughter, Ella Blue, was born in 2000.

The secret of their marriage:
Says Kelly: "We never go to bed angry. We work it out before we go to sleep unless we're too, too exhausted. Then we put it on hold until first thing."

 

Melanie Griffith & Antonio Banderas

Melanie Griffith & Antonio BanderasAntonio and Melanie met on the set of the film, Too Much in 1995. Melanie declared it was, ‘love at first sight' and after a whirlwind romance, the pair married on May 14, 1996, in London.

Ever since they got together, the couple have been plagued by rumours that their relationship is on the rocks. The rumours started again last year when Melanie (53) entered rehab. However Antonio (50) dismissed them insisting he was, "really proud" of his wife and that they were still very much in love.

Melanie had been married three times before (twice to actor Don Johnson) and Antonio once. They now have three children - two daughters and a son.

The secret of their marriage:
Antonio once said: "Marriage is like a fire that you feed with pieces of wood, little by little, and then if you cross a certain line around the sixth, seventh or eighth year, everything becomes a little easier."

 

Will Smith & Jada Pinkett

Will Smith & Jada PinkettWill (41) and Jada (38) have been together for 15 years and married for 12. They met when Jada auditioned for the role of Smith's girlfriend on The Fresh prince of Bel-Air. Unfortunately, she didn't get the part as she was too short, but they began dating.

The couple married in a secret ceremony on New Year's Eve, 1997 and have two children. Will also has a son from his first marriage.

It's reported that when filming commitments keep them apart, Will and Jada talk on the phone up to five times a day.

The secret of their marriage:
Says Will: "Families are like a business. The key is one person having a vision of what it needs to be and being able to pull everyone together. That's Jada for sure."

 

Meryl Streep and Don Gummer

Actress Meryl (61) was introduced to sculptor Don (63) by her brother Harry. The couple had a quiet wedding on September 15, 1978 at the home of her parents. They have four children and apart from the odd red carpet appearance, shun the showbiz world, preferring instead to spend most of their time at home in Connecticut.

The secret of their marriage:
Says Meryl:
"Goodwill and willingness to bend - and to shut up every once in a while."

 

Jon Bon Jovi & Dorothea Hurley

During a stop in Los Angeles on tour in 1989, Bon Jovi (48) secretly took a taxi to Las Vegas, where he married his high school sweetheart, martial arts instructor, Dorothea Hurley (49) on April 29, 1989 at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.

Eschewing the traditional indoor ceremony, he requested that their vows be exchanged outside, and with the cabbie as sole witness, the couple were married on the steps of the blue and white chapel in an austere service which cost $65. Together they have four children.

Grateful for the longevity of his marriage, Jon Bon Jovi returned to Graceland Chapel in 2001, and performed for 150 brides and grooms who wed in a group ceremony.

The secret of their marriage:
"Let's get that right here, right now. I'm afraid of my wife," laughs Jon Bon Jovi. "Best investment I ever made - trust me she is the best. I got a good deal."

 

Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell

Goldie Hawn & Kurt RussellThey may not be married, but actors Goldie Hawn (64) and Kurt Russell (59) have been together for a staggering 27 years. Russell and Goldie Hawn began dating in 1983 as they were filming the movie Swing Shift. They were in a movie together back in 1968, but it wasn't until Swing Shift that the sparks flew.

Both had been married before and each had had children with their previous partners. They had a son, Wyatt together in 1986 Hawn's son and daughter with Bill Hudson, actors Oliver and Kate Hudson, consider Russell to be their father.

The secret of their relationship:
Says Goldie: "What keeps a relationship together is the intention to make it work. Make time for each, play together, and stay sexy."

 

Bono & Ali Hewson

Paul Hewson (aka Bono) first started dating Ali when she was 15 and they were both pupils at Mount Temple Secondary Modern, in Dublin.

They married in 1982 in Dublin and together have forged one of the strongest unions in music. Many believe it is their unwavering support for one another (Bono may be a rock star and humanitarian activist, but Ali is also busy making a difference and is the founder of EDUN fashion label, which encourages Fair Trade with third world nations and the abolition of sweat shops and child labour).

Intensely private about their home life, Ali (49) and Bono (50), who live in the Dublin suburb of Killiney, have four children.

The secret of their marriage:

Says Ali: "Our marriage has worked because we like each other, because we talk to each other, and we are passionate about what we do. We allow each other to pursue our goals."

 

Ozzy & Sharon Osbourne

Ozzy and Sharon met when her father, Don Arden, was the manager for Ozzy's heavy metal band Black Sabbath. When Arden sacked Ozzy from the band in 1979, Osbourne began to manage the singer herself, marrying him three years later on a beach in Hawaii on 4th July 1982.

Ozzy & Sharon OsbourneHeavy drug abuse, however, meant that her new husband could be as volatile as her father. In 1989, having drunk four bottles of vodka, he tried to strangle his wife. Miraculously, they stayed together, and with the help of Sharon, Ozzy cleaned up his act and the two now live happily in England and the Hollywood Hills.

Sharon fought a long battle against colon cancer in 2002, during which time Ozzy refused to leave her side.

In addition to two children from Ozzy's previous marriage to Thelma Reilly, Ozzy and Sharon have three children of their own: Aimee, Kelly and Jack.

The secret of their marriage:
Says Sharon: "If you have children and there is still love there then you have to keep trying and absolutely exhaust that love before you opt out. But if you don't have children, then just head for the hills."

 

Michael J Fox & Tracy Pollan

Tracy (50) and Michael (49) met while working on the TV series Family Ties in 1985, but didn't date as they were both in relationships with other people. Two years later, they met again on the set of the movie, Bright Lights, Big City and as both were now single, romance blossomed.

They married, in a very private ceremony, on July 16, 1988 under a tent in the Arlington hills.

The strength of their love has been there for all to see as Michael has battled Parkinson's Disease. He was diagnosed in 1991, only three years after their wedding. The couple have four children and live in New York.

The secret of their marriage:
Says Tracy: "Michael and I had great role models. Both our parents had amazingly strong marriages and both weathered really tough times. For us, it's normal to stay together through hard times. We grew up witnessing that firsthand."

 

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick

Kevin Bacon and Kyra SedgwickFootloose star Kevin Bacon (51) has been married to actress Kyra Sedgwick (44) since September 4, 1988 when they met on the set of TV show Lemon Sky and married 10 months later.

The couple have a promise to each other that neither will work on a project while the other is.

Kyra and Kevin have two kids - Travis and Sosie Ruth and live in New York.

The secret of their marriage:
Says Kevin: "We are very supportive of one another's work and we talk a lot. And I mean a lot."

 

Helen Mirren & Taylor Hackford

Having been together since 1986, and after saying for years that she would never marry, actress Helen Mirren (65) tied the knot with director and producer Taylor Hackford (65) in Scotland on New Year's Eve, 1997.

Despite taking an instant dislike to Taylor when they first met on the set of White Nights, friendship and then romance blossomed. Hackford had been married twice before and has two children. The couple divide their time between Los Angeles and London.

The secret of their marriage:
Says Helen: "I have the incredible advantage of having a husband who is both loyal and understanding. In return I give him back loyalty and understanding, too. We couldn't be married without that."

 

Patrick Swayze & Lisa Niemi

Lisa and Patrick met when she was 15-years-old and she was one of Patrick's mother's dance students. The pair became inseparable friends before beginning dating and marrying on June 12, 1975 in the backyard of Lisa's home in Texas. Their reception was held in Patrick's mum's studio.

Patrick penned the Dirty Dancing song, She's Like the Wind for Lisa and over the years they worked together (although never onscreen) and dealt with disappointment, success, Patrick's alcohol addiction and his pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Patrick died at their ranch near Los Angeles on September 14, 2009, aged 57.

Lisa on her husband: "I spent two thirds of my life with him... My regret is that I didn't tell him that I loved him enough over those 34 years. I am so grateful for what we had and part of me believes that I will see him again and I'm just going to have to go on until then."
