How to give your wedding a vintage theme
With celebrities, such as Lily Allen, opting for low key vintage garden themed weddings, it is no surprise that it is fast becoming one of the most popular wedding themes writes Laura Menary from Vintage Touch.
It's not just celebrity endorsement that is making vintage an attractive option for brides-to-be, the fantastic thing about choosing a vintage theme is that it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can borrow vintage props such as china and pearls from family and friends and can even make your own accessories which adds to the whole vintage theme without looking makeshift.
Vintage styling is normally associated with the 1920s, 30s and 40s, a time period that covers everything from Art Deco to Hollywood Glamour, so the options really are endless. It’ all about mixing old and new to give an eclectic feel to your wedding day.
Start with a colour palette
As with any wedding theme, the best place to start is by deciding on your colour palate. If you are struggling for inspiration, gather together bridal magazines or visit your local library for books on bygone eras. Photocopy or cut out pictures of what you like, detailing everything from colours and patterns to potential wedding dresses and bridal bouquet designs. Then, using your collection of cuttings, pull together a mood board -you will probably notice that you have selected the same details and styles over and over again.
Decide on a wedding reception venue
Architecture and decor play a huge part in vintage styling so choosing the right venue is important. Rustic barn style venues such as Larchfield Estate are perfect for pulling off the vintage look as are fairytale places like Belfast Castle. Marquees give you a blank canvas and free range to go all out vintage. That doesn't mean to say that hotels are ruled out - there are some amazing venue dressing companies out there who are experts at transforming hotel suites to whisk you away to a vintage wonderland.
Seasonal styling
When styling for a summer wedding, stick to floral patterns, pastel colours and bunting. Use peonies, soft roses and wildflowers to give a laid back look.
For winter weddings you can add strings of pearls to the tables, mix in some classic glass candlesticks and opt for gold rimmed champagne glasses
Vintage essentials
- A vintage wedding dress from either Vera Wang (her 2012 collection makes me want to get married all over again) or the Vintage Wedding Dress Company (stocked at Petticoat Lane Bridal in Hillsborough)
- Vintage china for both catering and decoration - why not fill 3-tier cake stands with peonies and place them around your church/reception venue. Alternatively, instead of having flowers in between your wedding cake layers, try propping the layers on top of upturned vintage teacups (yes it does work!)
- Antique lace, whether this is for draping around the venue or using as tablecloths, it really gives your reception the wow factor.
Five top tips for styling a vintage themed wedding
- Start by pulling together a mood board to give you a clear vision of the look you want to achieve
- Mix new with authentic vintage items to give an eclectic feel with a fresh perspective
- Grab your granny! You will be amazed at what elderly relatives have hidden away, hoarding everything from vintage china to antique tablecloths
- Don’t forget that vintage does not just involve the decor and dress, why not ask your hairdresser or makeup artist to transform you and your bridesmaids into vintage goddesses - think Jean Harlow's curls with long false lashes and smokey eyes
- As with planning any style of wedding, enjoy it! Don’t get hung up on the minor details. The fab thing about going vintage is that not everything has to match, in fact, it looks better if it doesn't so just relax and go with the flow.
