In honour of his death here are Wedding Journal Online’s Top 12 Oscar De La Renta Celebrity Wedding Dresses
Famed bridal designer, Oscar De La Renta, has died aged 82. A spokesman for his wife, Annette De La Renta confirmed that he passed away on Monday evening.
The Dominican born couturier has spent five decades dressing the world’s greatest stars for their weddings and all manner of red carpet events. “His clothes have been to more awards shows than Meryl Streep,” said Michael Bloomberg when presenting Oscar with the 2012 Couture Council lifetime achievement award.
De La Renta had just sent his final bridal collection down the runway in New York, and cemented his status as wedding dress designer to the stars earlier this month when he created the incredible bridal gown worn by George Clooney’s new wife, Amal Alamuddin.
Oscar De La Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, but revealed in an interview last year that he was ‘totally clean’ of the disease.
Talking to the International Business Times, he said: “The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die. We always think we are going to live forever. The dying aspect we will never accept. The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life.
“People ask me, ‘At your age, when are you going to retire?’ I think every single day there is a learning process. For a long time…I wondered what would happen to the brand when I am no longer here. But I will be here for a very, very long time.”
Over the years, Oscar De La Renta has designed a multitude of iconic red carpet gowns for an array of A-list celebrities.
