How They Met

Melanie Stone and Stefan Skajarowski met in a little village in South West Cornwall in 2008. Stefan was running the local pub in Mawgan and Melanie popped in for an evening and met him across the bar. Melanie comments ‘he wooed me (very successfully) with his impeccable bar skills,’ and it wasn’t long before the pair shared their first kiss on 19th October 2008 at Falmouth Beer Festival.

Stefan moved to Ireland three weeks after that and Melanie took a chance and followed him there! The couple were living together the February after that in Lahinch, County Clare, they just knew that they were made for each other.

The Proposal

After getting home late after surfing, Stefan got the surprise of a lifetime with his kids still up and a proposal from Melanie! ‘She handed me a card asking if I would marry her in Vegas on our ten year anniversary – which was four days later!’ Stefan recalls.

Melanie adds she had been so focussed on organising the wedding she hadn’t given much thought to proposing! With October drawing closer, and all the confirmations coming back, she decided she would do it at the airport surrounded by friends and family. However, the weekend before she felt she wanted to propose with their children, as they wouldn’t be making the trip to Vegas, and it would  help let the news sink in!

‘Out came the sewing machine and in a day I had made the ‘will you marry me?’ bunting. Molly Mae and Asher were excited to surprise their Daddy and I’m pleased how I did it in the end. It felt right to involve our children.’

The Day

After landing in Vegas, the party checked in at The Cosmopolitan Hotel Room 1811. Then it was time to get ready!

Once ready, the bride and her girls traveled by limo to The Graceland Wedding Chapel for the ceremony to continue their incredibly fun and relaxed day!

There was no guessing what the plans were for after the ceremony; hearty American food and a party in the hotel before hitting the famous Vegas Strip and casinos for the rest of the night!

Melanie organised everything over the internet, bar her wedding gift of a wedding cake! When times got overwhelming she took a step back and asked herself ‘am I keeping to my theme of is it fun?’ If the answer was yes, on she went!

When it came to picking a photographer, Melanie knew good friend Olga from MrsRedHead was the perfect choice.

‘She is a fabulous wedding photographer. I love her creative style and the alternative twist with her photography. I was over the moon when she said yes!’

‘Her photos have surpassed any expectations we had, I can’t recommend her enough. Thank you Olga for the beautiful photographs – they give us so much pleasure.’

What The Bride Wore And The Rest

Melanie’s wedding dress search was done online, under the radar of Stefan’s eye of course! ‘I finally found my dress through Monsoon Bridal and fell in love with it. On the lead up to the wedding I would sneak into the bathroom to try it on!’ she laughs.

However, Melanie’s friends did want her to try the experience of going to a bridal boutique to try on the dresses. Melanie admits there was one she nearly bought! ‘It was such a special experience to try the dresses on and the lady was so lovely and very helpful.’

At one point the lady was helping Melanie into a dress and asked how did her fiancé propose. Before she could answer, her friends had burst out laughing and Melanie had to explain how he hadn’t proposed and had no idea what she was planning! ‘If she thought I was mad, she certainly didn’t show it,’ she adds.

The bridesmaids dresses were also bought online and Melanie left it up to them to choose whatever they wanted! ‘I think they all looked beautiful on the day,’ she comments, ‘There were sequins galore!’

Due to the nature of the wedding there wasn’t an over abundance of flowers, however Melanie did order a bouquet through the Graceland Wedding Chapel. ‘I ordered for the roses to be pink to match my pink hair!’

After the wedding ceremony, the wedding party took the limo to Rollin’ Smoke Barbecue House, where they had a table reserved.

This kept with the fun and relaxed atmosphere! The group ordered from the regular menu which consisted of all things barbecue from burgers to spare ribs and pulled pork sandwiches! And while the restaurant didn’t serve alcohol, they very kindly let the party bring their own.

‘The staff were fabulous and the food was delicious and hearty, it set us up for a great night on the town! Everyone could order whatever they wanted and I wouldn’t change a thing.’

Melanie hadn’t planned on getting a cake but good friend and bridesmaid Amy ordered one for the couple as a wedding present! ‘It was such a lovely surprise on the day and it tasted so good!’ the couple comment.

The cake was two tiered and decorated with the Las Vegas sign and golden gambling chips, and tasted of red velvet on one tier and champagne on the other.

Favourite Moments

Stefan: ‘There are a couple! Taking in the craziness of Vegas as we walked the Strip on our wedding night; partying in the hotel room after the meal and just being surrounded by our closest friends who had all managed to keep it a surprise from me!’

Melanie: ’All of it. I loved every minute! From breakfast in bed with my husband to be, to getting ready with the girls at the Spa, to strutting around in our Spanx in the hotel room! I loved my limo drive with my gorgeous bride tribe to what can only be described as the quickest and funniest service EVER. And getting to marry my ‘Stefawn.’’

‘I loved our dinner; laughing, eating and the wonderful speeches followed by partying in our hotel room before hitting the casinos and bright lights of Vegas. Having fun with Olga too, while she worked her magic behind the camera to capture every single moment!’
