Wedding Hair

Your wedding hair is something you will have deliberated with for months. Here we take a closer look at the messy bun.

Weddingjournalonline spoke to hairdresser Stephanie Burns from Stephanie Burns Hair & Make-up about this season’s bridal hair trend – the messy bun. Appearing on the bridal runways and on Irish brides, we wanted to find out more about this popular style.

Stephanie, what type of bride/bridal look do you feel the messy bun is best suited?

I think it would suit a relaxed, less formal style of bridal look, something quite boho-chic. It would also be great for a beach wedding, casually elegant and unfussy yet still softly controlled.

What are your top tips for ensuing the look lasts all day?

Make sure the hair is well prepped beforehand. The messy bun looks and behaves better when the texture of the hair is quite matte – if it’s too silky and soft, it won’t last the day! I like to set hair on large heated rollers first to give volume and ‘spring’ to the style, then plenty of dry shampoo and finish with Elnett hairspray – it holds beautifully while still leaving the hair workable.

What should a bride consider when going for a messy bun?

As always, first consider if the style that suits you and if it’s achievable with your hair or whether you’ll need extensions or padding. Then decide if it will work with the overall theme of the wedding and if it will work with the neckline of your dress.

Finally, what bridal hair accessories do you think would work well?

My favourite accessory for a messy bun is a ribbon-tied headband which can be worn in a variety of different ways. Fresh flowers interwoven into the hair look amazing too.
