Celebrations broke out across Australia today, after a two-month national postal survey came out “overwhelmingly” in favour of legalizing same-sex marriage.

Results have shown that the Australians have voted for same-sex marriage laws to be changed, with the Australian Bureau of statistics revealing that 61% of the population voted to allow same-sex marriage, and 38% voting against. This survey was taken by 12.7 million people across the country (79.5% of the population) with every state and territory returning a majority YES vote.

The result was announced at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, and was met with a host of celebrations, singing and tears by eagerly waiting campaigners. Despite this fantastic victory, the outcome of the result is not currently binding, and the result must now be brought before the Australian Parliament in Canberra, who will pass legislation.

The Australian prime minister, Malcolm Turnball has spoken out regarding this result, saying it is now his duty to change the same-sex marriage law before Christmas. In a live broadcast video, which was also shared on Twitter, he said:

“The Australian people have had their say, and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality. They voted overwhelmingly for fairness, Yes for commitment, Yes for love. And now it’s our job, as the Australian Parliament, all of us here to get on with it and get this done before Christmas.”
