Having just returned from a short break at Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle, Co. Down, I’ve already started telling everyone I know that it’s a true gem. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel truly welcome. They were helpful, attentive, and genuinely warm without ever being overbearing.
The hotel’s setting is simply spectacular. Waking up to the sweep of the Mourne Mountains on one side and the distant glimpse of the Irish Sea on the other, was something special, and the hotel’s reception lobby and rooms are beautifully appointed with a chic, comfortable feel.

We had a sea view room, and like all of the bedrooms in this stylish hotel, it’s bespoke styling is inspired by the property’s Victorian history, with colour and pattern being used to striking effect. The décor throughout Slieve Donard pays homage to the destination’s seaside beauty and rich Irish traditions, with an aim to preserve the period characteristics of the building.
Dining was a highlight. The breakfast spread was generous and well-curated, with great choices for any mood – fresh fruit, pastries, and a hot selection that hit the spot after a brisk coastal walk. We also enjoyed a superb dinner in the restaurant, where every course highlighted quality ingredients and careful preparation.

Spanning two floors, The Spa at Slieve Donard was another standout. The thermal pool area is so relaxing and makes the best use of the natural scenery outside – the perfect backdrop to this indulgent experience, which will leave you feeling refreshed and inspired.

As we always love to be able to recommend a good wedding venue here at Wedding Journal, I have to add that this really is an excellent option. Even on a cloudy day, the scenery is cinematic. It would be a fantastic backdrop for photos, and the terrace or lobby areas could stage elegant arrivals or a relaxed champagne moment.

The public rooms feel classic and versatile with their high ceilings, chandeliers, and a refined, but comfortable ambience. There are multiple, newly renovated event-friendly spaces, ranging in capacity from 25 to 800, that can be adapted for a civil ceremony, a champagne reception, and a sit-down dinner, with late licences offered complimentary for some packages. The hotel’s dedicated team of wedding planners will help to create bespoke packages to fit your individual needs.
One of the largest function suites in Northern Ireland, the magnificent Grand Ballroom comfortably hosts up to 800 guests. Or for those wanting a more intimate reception, the Brunel Lounge can host up to 100 guests and benefits from floor-to-ceiling windows with mountain and sea view.

If your guests are seeking downtime before or after the big day, the spa and leisure facilities are a major bonus, along with nearby outdoor options for a brisk mountain hike or a coastal stroll. It’s worth noting that wedding guests also get preferential rates at the hotel, so they can stay longer and enjoy the property, including its four fabulous dining options and a tranquil spa.
If it’s a wedding venue you are after or an escape for just the two of you, with a blend of luxury, scenery, and genuine hospitality, Slieve Donard Hotel is a perfect pick. I’m already looking forward to my next stay!
