With the Coronavirus pandemic looming large, most of us have had to adapt to certain changes. You might be getting used to working from home in your pyjamas when you’re normally suited and booted for your 9-5. Or maybe you’re sussing out how to do Friday night Happy Hour from the comfort of your couch.
But is adapting your IRL wedding to a virtual one a step too far?
With many brides facing the prospect of postponing or cancelling their wedding days, some are opting to have their wedding ceremony over the popular video chat app Zoom. In parts of The States, where it’s now legal to hold your ceremony over the app, many couples have said ‘I Do’ while their friends and family watch remotely.
Over the weekend, New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced that couples would be able to legally partake in a virtual wedding, tweeting:
“I am issuing an Executive Order allowing New Yorkers to obtain a marriage license remotely and allowing clerks to perform ceremonies via video conference.”
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates recently announced that its citizens would also be able to marry online.
In Ireland and the UK this kind of marriage is not yet legally binding but many couples have been opting to say their vows and use their Zoom marriage as a place-holder until the day they’re finally able to say ‘I do’ for real.
