A highlight that was watched by thousands in the Citywest and over 4K on our Facebook was our fabulous Win a €35,000 Wedding. 98fm’s breakfast hosts Cooper and Luke welcomed 13 nervous couples to the stage, all hoping to win this once-in-a-lifetime prize, but there could only be one. It’s time to meet our lucky winners – Amy & Séan! We sat down with our winning couple a few days after it the weekend’s bombshell started to sink in a little…

Congrats once again guys, I hope it all feels a little bit more real! So why don’t you tell us a little bit more about yourselves, where did you first meet, and how did love start to blossom?

Séan definitely knows you well Amy! So you got the ring, what made you enter our competition?

‘I’m a massive fan of 98fm and listen to the big breakfast with Cooper and Luke every morning going to work. We had literally just started looking at venues and were starting to save when I heard the competition on the radio, so thought what’s the harm in texting in. I was just about to head into work one morning when I got a call. They had myself and another guy playing against each other in a general knowledge quiz. I have to say it’s very nerve wrecking being on the radio, the lads are true professionals. I was absolutely delighted when I got through as a finalist and rang Séan and my mam straight away. We had all our fingers and toes crossed from that day!

Were you nervous before the big final, did you prep before hand?

We were very nervous! We were going to look at a venue last Monday and were playing Mr and Mrs in the car on the way! Séan kept forgetting my favourite colour, so I didn’t have high expectations! I was also terrified we were going to have to sing or dance on stage! My mam was saying she thought it might be more like a winning streak style but we didn’t know what to expect at all. My grandad had been lighting candles and everything! We became even more nervous when we saw all the other finalists, the size of the stage and all the people watching. We loved the show, there was so much choice and entertainment throughout the day. We were literally about to put a deposit on a cake when Sean jokingly said we should wait to see the result of the competition (luckily we did!).’

That’s so funny, great-thinking Séan! So you make it down to the final two couples, how did it feel when you opened the 98fm suitcase and you realise you’d just won?

‘We were in complete shock- I’d say you could see from my reaction in the video. I was absolutely speechless!! It just felt so surreal, we never expected to win anything like that in our lives. We were just saying today it was like an outer-body experience! It’s starting to sink in now and we can’t believe it. It’s such a life changing prize and we honestly cannot express how over the moon and grateful we are to have won.’

With all your wedding suppliers selected for, all that’s left to do is pick a venue and set a date now? 

‘We had absolutely nothing booked before Sunday, so this was prize was a dream come true! We had just started looking at venues for 2022 or even 2023. We were originally hoping to get married in 2021 but realised we were going to need time to save so had decided to push it out as we’re also trying to save for a house. We are so so grateful to be able to now move our wedding forward to 2021 which wouldn’t have been possible without this amazing prize. We hadn’t thought of a honeymoon at all, we were going to postpone until a good while after the wedding just to give us time to save again! We can’t believe we’re going to Zanzibar-what an amazing opportunity! The honeymoon we would have picked definitely wouldn’t have been near as fancy as that and to fly business class too-absolutely amazing!’

It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime competition – have you any final thoughts? 

‘We just want to say a massive thank you to the wedding journal, 98FM and all the sponsors who are absolutely lovely and we are so excited to have them on board for our wedding. We are so lucky to have the best of the best of everything for our wedding and it wouldn’t have been possible without you all. You’ve taken so much pressure off our wedding planning, thank you to you all from the bottom of our hearts.’

David (28) and Stephanie (23) first met through mutual friends. ‘I was studying at Loughry College with one of David’s friends and we met on a night out and really the rest is history as they say.’

After four years together, in February of this year, David surprised Stephanie with a night away at Castle Leslie where he got down on one knee and proposed. ‘I had no idea that he would propose and when I turned around from looking at the bouquet of flowers he had got me he was down on one knee with the ring he had picked in his hand.’

As this is where David proposed, the couple decided to marry at Castle Leslie in August next year and came along to The Wedding Show in the TEC Belfast ,for some inspiration and a fun wedding planning day out as they put the finishing touches to their special day.

‘When I was purchasing tickets for the Show I thought why not enter to Win the £35,000 Wedding and I couldn’t believe it when I got a call to say we had made it to the final 12 and would we be free to come along to the Show for the live final on Sunday 6^th October,’ explains Stephanie.

‘We had no idea what to expect on the day and certainly never imagined that we would walk away as the winning couple. In fact we were the last couple to be drawn from the bowl on stage so we didn’t even have the chance to select our own envelope in the first round which dictated what we did in the other two rounds – so fate was obviously with us!’

Stephanie’s mum was with the couple to help cheer them on and celebrate with them on the day. ‘Our family kindly offered to contribute towards some of the wedding expenses but winning this had made it much easier and allows David and I the chance to save for our future,’ adds Stephanie who is studying for her Masters in Human Nutrition at the University of Ulster while also organising her wedding.

David and Stephanie can now plan their dream wedding with the help of Ciara and Emma Jane from venue stylists Elegant Extras NI, who, along with Heather’s floral skills from Blossoms & Bluebells will be able to get creative and add a unique twist to their amazing wedding venue.

Lauren Gilmour and her expert team from The Bridal Company Northern Ireland will be dressing Stephanie and her bridesmaids and newly opened Freddie Hatchet Fine Tailoring will ensure that David and his groomsmen are well turned out for the occasion too!

On hand to capture the entire day, award-winning wedding and portrait photographer Peter Thomas from Peter Thomas Photography will be creating lasting memories for the couple as they capture their day in his distinctive style.

Things To See & Do

Find you inner child and learn to climb a coconut palm and learn to weave palm leaves and make a hat or mat for a memory of Zanzibar.

Cooking classes are also organised regularly where you can learn to prepare some classical Swahili dishes with the help of the excellent Baraza chefs who talk about the local spices and their use and importance.

Visit the local village of Bwejuu and see how Zanzibaris shop, live and work. See the school, a typical house and walk around accompanied by a guide who is from the village. You will have a soda at the local kiosk and see the goings on in Bwejuu.

Victoria O’Connor and Darrach Campbell were childhood sweethearts, meeting at a friends’ house as teenagers. Darrach chased his bride for two months, before Victoria eventually gave in to his charms, agreeing to go on a date and quickly fell in love.

The Proposal

Darrach proposed to Victoria on her birthday, with a little help from some tiny hands. ‘Darrach had been acting funny the day before my birthday, so I presumed he was planning some form of surprise to celebrate that, I really didn’t expect a ring!’

Darrach roped in his eldest daughter Niamh, who was 2 at the time. Taking place in the family back garden, Darrach subtly placed Victoria’s stunning engagement ring onto young Niamh’s little finger, prompting her to ask ‘mammy to marry daddy.’

‘It was such a surprise, it’s a lovely family moment to look back on,’ blushes Victoria.

The Day

First on the couple’s to-do list was to secure their venue, having already preliminary booked the Tullylagan Country House Hotel, it felt right to contact them again. ‘We fell in love with the grounds and the old country house feel.’

Based in the heart of Mid-Ulster, Tullylagan is a step back in time and a rural paradise. ‘Within minutes of arriving at Tullylagan, we fell in love with its rustic style, we felt comfortable and relaxed,’ she adds.

Décor

Included in the bumper prize was the opportunity to work alongside Event Planners NI, ‘Julie-Anne was great, I didn’t necessarily want a theme, I just knew the colours I loved. I wanted to incorporate the grey in my bridesmaids dresses and Julie-Anne knew exactly what to do.

Our table linens matched perfectly, the chairs were from Tullylagan and were just right, and there was a spectacular draping along the back wall; the room looked great. My favourite detail had to be the black and white checkered floor; that would have been something I never would have thought about using, but it looked amazing and everyone loved it.’

What The Bride Wore And The Rest…

When it came to the all important dress, Victoria, like any eager bride thought she knew what she wanted. ‘I think I tried about five or six dresses on, but I kept coming back to one, and it wasn’t what I originally had envisioned.

Eden Bridal provided the bridal wear element of the prize, and Kimberly was on hand with her expert eye to make sure Victoria looked stunning on her wedding day. A couture Enzoani gown from Eden Bridal had caught Victoria’s eye, and Darrach notes that ‘Victoria and the girls walking down the aisle definitely brought a tear to my eye.’

‘I loved the sleeve of my dress, the intricate Chantilly lace and tulle on the dress complimented my bridal party spot on.’  Lace grey Mark Lesley bridesmaids dresses complemented the lace detail in the bride’s dress. ‘I felt like our dresses were perfect for the time of year, and also looked beautiful against the backdrop of our church and reception,’ comments Victoria.

Dararch was under the impression that picking his suits would be a ‘lads day out,’ however when Victoria arrived to help the boys out, the grooms wear was going to be more of a joint decision. ‘Hire Class was included in our winning package, Darrach knew he wanted something comfortable but looked sharp and well tailored. I picked a paisley print bow tie for Darrach and the other groomsmen had grey satin ties to match the bridesmaids.’

Murray & Co Jewellers supplied the couple’s wedding rings, with Darrach choosing a gold band with a white gold centre, and a traditional Celtic design in the middle. Victoria selected a classic gold and diamond wedding band, ‘When Darrach spotted his he knew he had to have it, it’s something so unique, meanwhile I wanted something elegant and traditional.’

Food

The Elite Cake Company provided a four-tier wedding cake, being decorated with gold, ivory and grey features. There were decorative white icing flowers, similar to those in the bouquet, with grey and gold ribbons tied between layers.  Victoria adds ‘the cake was important as it incorporated all our colours from the flowers to the dresses together; I wanted everything to flow together.’

Capturing The Memories 

It was a little overwhelming for the couple in regards to who they wanted to capture their big day. ‘Research was crucial, and reading wonderful comments online by previous couples, I knew I had to contact Tommy and his wife Lauren at Pure Photo NI.’

‘We didn’t need to stop off anywhere else for photographs, as the grounds at Tullylagan are perfect for what we wanted, something natural and rustic. We were delighted with our photos; Tommy was so down to earth and we felt instantly at ease in front of the camera. We loved that they made an effort to mingle in with our guests.’

Words of Wisdom

Darrach’s advice for any groom before the planning process is to agree with everything!

And Victoria simply adds that ‘it can be so stressful, so try and enjoy everything, even the panicked moments. It’s over so fast, I would love to do it all over again, and you actually miss it when it’s over!’

The Honeymoon

Darrach and Victoria were able to relax after the wedding with a luxury honeymoon. Part of their prize included business class flights with Emirates to Dubai and they stayed at Movenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach.

Kyle surprised Kathryn back in March by entering our Win a Wedding competition at the Wedding Journal Show. Little did they know that in June they would be sunning themselves in Crete, celebrating their honeymoon. After much deliberation we went for the full body massage because why not, we were on our honeymoon! This also included a hydro massage bath for 30 minutes and 40 minutes in the hydro pool, it was incredible.’

EATING OUT

‘Each morning we woke up to the most delicious honeymoon breakfast; with fresh fruits and pastries, we were treated like VIP’s the entire trip.’ The Royal Mare offers six different restaurants and two bars, each hosting a variety of flavours and themes. They are renowned for using only fresh, local products to create inspired and healthy versions of classical recipes.

‘All the different restaurants were amazing, especially the Asian. They had a great mix of Oriental flavours with a refreshing modern taste. The food in each restaurant was so well prepared; it was all grilled rather than fried. Aldemar Royal Mare offers themed food nights for guests to discover new and exciting flavours, such as Lobster, Cretan, BBQ and Italian nights.

MUST SEE

‘The whole trip was simply amazing, it really was perfect! We looked forward to the sunset each night.

The Royal Mare looks out over the ocean, so you can just imagine the views we got as the sun started to set, we’d never seen colours like it before.’

GETTING THERE

Kathryn and Kyle flew with Belfast to Heraklion with Jet2 Holidays. ‘We flew to Crete in just under 4 hours, it was a great experience. The food was five star, I had a Roast Chicken dinner, and Kyle had Chilli Con Carne, we even treated ourselves to a drink or two. It was the perfect way to kick-start our honeymoon.’

‘Looking back on our honeymoon now, we wish we had availed of the water sports and activities the resort had to offer. However we found it so hard to get motivated, we were simply too relaxed. We cannot thank Jet2 and the Aldemar Royal Mare enough for an absolutely, amazing experience. We started our marriage in absolute bliss.’
