This wedding invitation wording guide breaks down formal and informal invitation wording with examples and designs to inspire you!

Don’t know where to start when it comes to wording your wedding invitations? Don’t worry, this guide on how to word your wedding invitations will walk you through everything step-by-step so you don’t miss a thing! The good news is, wedding invitation wording is actually more straightforward than you think.

Whether you want to keep the language formal or informal is totally up to you – but there are some basic elements that should be included no matter what! However, the most important rule is that you create informative and beautiful wedding invitations that show details on your day and reflect your personality!

RELATED TO: Everything To Include In Your Wedding Invitation Suite

What do I need to include in my wedding invitations?

– Who is hosting the wedding
– Names of the bride & groom
– Date & time of the ceremony
– Name of the wedding venues
– Reception information
– Dress code
– RSVP contact details & deadline (separate card)

HOW TO WORD YOUR WEDDING INVITATIONS (line-by-line!):

  1. Start with the host line

Firstly, you should start with the host line which is where you pay tribute to who is hosting (or paying for) the wedding. This is usually the names of the bride and groom or one or both sets of parents.

If yourself and both sets of parents have contributed to hosting the day, you can put “together with their parents, (bride’s name) and (groom’s name) request the pleasure of your company”.

If you want to include divorced parents as hosts, just keep each name on a separate line. However, if you are including the name of a stepparent then you should keep this on the same line as their partner.

You can also add deceased parents to the host line, all you need to do is rearrange the wording slightly as someone who has passed cannot actually host the day. Below is an example of how to word your wedding invitations to include a deceased parent:

“Sarah Smith, daughter of Mr. John Smith and the late Ellen Smith,
    and
Joe Green, son of Mr. Jack and Mary Green,
request the honour of your presence
    at their wedding
    on Saturday
the second of July twenty twentytwo
    at twelve o’clock noon
    St Andrews Church
    Reception to follow

    Black tie required”

Below invitation by Perfect Day PrintFIND OUT MORE!

  2. Add the request to attend phrase

This is where you should add a line asking your guests to attend the wedding and indicates what kind of ceremony it is. For e.g. “request the honour of your presence” usually implies this is a religious ceremony and using the phrase “request the pleasure of your company” can indicate a civil ceremony.

If one set of parents are hosting the wedding, then this line usually reads “request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter (bride’s name) to (groom’s name). If both sets of parents are hosting, you can add “at the marriage of their children” followed by the names of the couple.

Other examples of how to word the request phrase are:

    “together with their families”
invite you to celebrate with them”
“would love for you to join them”
    “the pleasure of your company”
    “honour of your presence”

  3. Now add the names of the bride & groom

The names of the couple should be a main focus on the invites! Although this step seems obvious, did you know the bride’s name is traditionally supposed to come in front of the groom’s?

For instance, more formal and traditional invitations issued by the bride’s parents will usually refer to the bride by her first and middle names and the groom by his full name and title. However, if you are hosting by yourselves or want to keeps things more informal you can include just your first names!

When it comes to same-sex couples, the traditional rule of the woman’s name before the man’s does not apply. You can choose to keep this random or go by alphabetical order – it’s really up to you!

Below invitation by Darling Stationery – FIND OUT MORE!

  4. Include the date & time of ceremony

If you want to keep things formal and traditional, you should spell out the date and time in full words (no numerals). You should also include the day of the week and year of the wedding. An example of this is shown in the first step.

If your wedding is happening that year, you do not have to include the year on the invitation as this will indicate your ceremony is on the nearest such date. For casual weddings, using numerals instead of words is fine.

  5. Add wedding venues/location

Normally, the name of the venue is all that needs to be included with reference to the town, city or county. The full street address is not necessary unless not including it could lead to confusion – if the ceremony is in a family home, for example.

You can always include the full address of the venue on your guest information cards when giving directions to the location of the wedding.

Below invitation by The Wedding Scribblers – FIND OUT MORE!

  6. Include details on the reception

To stick with formalities, the reception information is normally included on a separate card. Otherwise, you can add reception details to the main invitation if room allows.

If the wedding ceremony and reception are in the same venue, you can add “reception to follow” or “followed by dinner, drinks and dancing”.

However, if you reception is at a different venue then you should add this to a different line. You can also create separate evening wedding invitations for those only invited to the after party.

  7. Indicate the dress code

Traditional wedding invitation etiquette indicates the dress code – this is usually located on the lower right-hand corner of the invitation. If you do not include a note on the wedding attire, your invitation itself will indicate the dress code.

For example, if the wedding invitations look formal and fancy, the guests will likely opt for a more formal, black-tie look. If the invitations are more simple and casual, then you can expect your guests to come in more casual attire.

Below invitation by Lots of Love Invitations – FIND OUT MORE HERE!

  8. The RSVP card & details

Normally, there is a separate response card included alongside the main invitation for guests to fill out and post their response. It is important that the RSVP card includes the reply deadline date and an area to add who can or cannot attend. You can also add a little section for choosing menu options or song requests if you wish!

Alternatively, you can also have people respond via your wedding website. Just add the website address to a separate card as you would with an RSVP card and let the guests know they can fill in their response directly on the website.

Wedding Invitations

Although it may seem obvious what to include in your wedding invitations, many times couples forget the key details! These are commonly your date, time, ceremony location and reception location.

After this, you can also add what is known as ‘corner copy’, for some extra details on things like your reception or any special notes. If you have a wedding website, remember to add this now.

RSVP

When sending your RSVPs, don’t forget to include a pre-addressed envelope and stamp for your guests’ convenience – you want to make it as easy as possible for them to get back to you with a response. A cut-off date is also needed to make sure your guests know exactly when you need to know if they are coming or not!

If you’re having meal choices, you can include checkboxes on the response cards for people to choose ahead of time.

*TOP TIP*

When finalising your guestlist, add a number beside each name and add this number to the back of the corresponding response card – this can help you keep track of your responses as they come in just in case you cannot read the writing or they leave out some details!

Envelope

Here’s another obvious but essential must-have – an envelope, duh! Luckily, many stationery suppliers offer plenty of stylish envelopes to send off your paper goods. You can personalise these to match your wedding vibe and aesthetic! We especially love this rustic design by Perfect Day Print.

Postage

This is one many people tend to not think about until the last minute, but all this stationery can mean your envelope will weigh more than you think! Make sure you get your invitation suite weighed at your local post office to see what you need. Whilst doing this, look into your stamp options to find what best suits you – you’d be surprised at the many designs you can choose from!

Stationery by Lots of Love Invitations

*TOP TIP*

When it comes to posting off your invites, you might want to request hand-canceled stamps over machine-canceled. All stamps to be canceled when set so that they cannot be reused, but machine canceled stamps can leave a jagged line across your beautifully designed envelope!

Inner Envelope

This is an optional choice as you can have a slightly smaller envelope inside your mailing envelope which holds your invitations for who is specifically invited. This gives you the chance to make use of some beautiful font and calligraphy by placing the name of each guest and their plus ones.

*TOP TIP*

If you’re thinking of having a kids-free wedding, you can subtly address this now by – if you are sending your invites to a family household with children, go for ‘The Jacksons’ if you don’t mind kids, or go for ‘Mary and David Jackson’ to set the tone for an adult-only invite.

Reception Card

If you wedding reception is not in the same location as your ceremony, you may want to include a separate card for more reception details. If you are holding a reception before 1pm, this is normally referred to as a ‘Breakfast Reception’, whilst anything after 1pm is just called ‘Reception’. You can indicate the vibe you are going for with as much details as you like, i.e. Dinner Reception, Drinks Reception or even an Adults-Only Reception.

Directions

Although we are living in the modern world of ‘google-mapping it’, its always a good idea to include directions in your wedding invitation suite just in case your guests’ phone dies or for your elderly guests who do not regularly use technology. Be careful to use a simple font when it comes to this so all the details clear.

Weekend Events Card

If you planning a weekend celebration with multiple events such as welcome drinks, an after party and a day-after brunch, consider including a full itinerary for guests so they know what to expect and what to pack for. They will appreciate the extra information and is another opportunity for you to style up more stationery!

Stationery by The Wedding Scribblers

Accommodation Card

Again this is optional, but can be worth it especially for your guests who will be travelling that extra bit further to celebrate with you! Make life a little easier for them by including some close hotel recommendations with a deadline for making a reservation. If you’re covering accommodation costs, its common etiquette to include this and transport details.

Invitation Wrapper

After assembling your full wedding invitation suite, you can include a super cute and stylish invitation wrapper such as a silk ribbon or wax seal. Choose a colour that matches your inside stationery and use this chance to add those finishing touches!

It’s going to be an amazing day – eventually. But the constantly changing Covid rules and postponements have made wedding planning hugely stressful, and the last thing you want to do is put your foot in it. Here’s what not to say.

Around seven in 10 couples who had planned to wed last year have been forced to postpone their weddings to a later date – a major decision and one that is never taken lightly. It can mean a huge financial hit, the paring down of plans and having to cut out many of the guests.

Even postponing your wedding won’t necessarily solve all the problems caused by Covid-19 and couples are constantly worrying about what restrictions could be brought in next, according to relationship therapist Zoe Williams from health and wellness brand GearHungry.

Many couples issue their ‘change the date’ stationary quickly after they have postponed, which can be costly and take a lot of time. So setting aside the time to respond to a ‘change the date’ notice is not only polite, but perhaps the best way to react to the news, she says.

RELATED TO: How To Avoid A Save The Date Disaster

And it’s worth weighing your words carefully when you discover a friend or relative is having to change their wedding plans – the last thing you want to do is pile on even more pressure.

‘Two celebrations? Which is the real wedding?’

We’re now seeing the ‘sequel wedding’, in which the couple hosts a small ceremony that meets government guidelines, and go on to hold a later ceremony with the traditional reception.

“Postponing a wedding is not as easy as simply altering a date, especially if deposits and in some cases, final payments have already been made’, Zoe Williams says.

“For some, hosting two celebrations is the most financially viable option. All couples will view their celebrations as their ‘real’ wedding as they will hold equal significance. Refrain from asking questions that insinuate one ceremony must be more important than the other, as the presence of their loved ones will be the most important.”

‘2022? Really?’

2021 is already seeing an influx of weddings postponed from last year, so many venues are fully booked for 2021 and many couples have little choice but to postpone their nuptials until 2022.

“Asking why a couple has postponed their nuptials so far in advance is a sure-fire way to rub salt in the wound,” says Williams.

RELATED TO: Postponed Your Wedding? Here’s Why Your New Date Is Going To Be Even Better

“It is not a decision that anyone will have taken lightly and a lot of the time it’s something that they have been forced into due to venue availability and vendors’ prior commitments. If you are available to attend the couple’s new date, state straight away that you will be there. It is the best response you can give to a couple.”

‘At least you can plan more’

‘I really sympathise with a couple when their loved ones try to reassure them that their day will be even better as they can now plan more’, says Williams.

“It is always said with the best intentions – however, people neglect to consider the planning that goes into a wedding and the endless hours the couple has already spent preparing…for a date that is no longer theirs.”

‘That’s a shame, I’ve already booked a hotel and organised childcare’

The postponement might be inconvenient, but keep it to yourself, Williams says.

“The likelihood is that the wedding hosts have lost hundreds, if not thousands of pounds. Money is perhaps the most stressful aspect of a wedding day and most couples are all too aware of the financial impact their decisions have on their guests. Suspending plans may affect you, but in the grand scheme of things, it is minor.”

Oh, is it a weekday wedding now? That’s tricky’

If you’re worried that all your annual leave is going towards attending weddings, just keep it to yourself..

“A lot of the devastation that surrounds delaying a wedding is that a lot of choice is removed from the couple’s hands. With a lot of venue calendars fully booked, couples are securing the only date that is offered to them,” Williams says.

“Try to be sympathetic to the situation and if you are not able to attend, let the couple know ASAP.”

‘You’re not going to postpone again?’

Asking a couple if their wedding plans will be postponed again is like asking them to predict the future – there’s no way they can know.

“Postponing a wedding fills a couple with dread, and the idea of postponing multiple times is their worst-case scenario,” William says.

“When a couple gives you a date, treat it as a definite. It is unlikely that couples will have back up dates and the idea of such will add additional stress.’

‘At least you can save money. Weddings are too expensive anyway’

“This is arguably the worst statement to make in reaction to hearing of a postponement. Many couples have incurred further costs that they have not accounted for in their initial budgeting and in some cases, even lost deposits,” says Williams.

The Prime Minister and his fiancee Carrie Symonds are reported to be planning their wedding next summer after sending out save-the-date cards to family and friends.

According to The Sun, Boris Johnson plans to marry his fiancee in July 2022 — making him only the second British Prime Minister to wed in office.

There has been speculation that the prime minister’s Buckinghamshire residence, Chequers, could host the wedding, although another possibility is the Port Lympne safari park in Kent, as Carrie Symonds works for the Aspinall Foundation, the conservation charity that runs the zoo.

The couple could even marry in Italy where Carrie has relatives.

RELATED TO: How to avoid a save the date disaster

The big day, reportedly set for Saturday, July 30, 2022, would be the third for Boris, whose private life has been notoriously turbulent.

He is also thought to be the first PM to divorce in office since Augustus FitzRoy, the 3rd Duke of Grafton who left his first wife Anne in 1769 with the help of an act of Parliament.

Boris tied the knot with his first wife Allegra Mostyn-Owen in 1987, but their marriage was annulled in 1993, the same year he married Marina Wheeler. While the couple had four children, they separated in 2018 and formally divorced weeks before news emerged of the engagement to Carrie.

RELATED TO: Wedding Stationery & Flower Inspiration

Boris and Carrie were the first unmarried couple to live in Downing Street, moving there in July 2019, and the Prime Minister is reported to have proposed on holiday on the Caribbean island of Mustique, although a parliamentary standards probe has since been announced into the funding of the 10-day break.

The couple’s son, Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson, was born in April 2020 and christened at Westminster Cathedral in September – could the famous London church be a contender for the wedding?

Meanwhile, while Mr Johnson’s own country house in Henley, Oxfordfordshire, might be a suitable venue for the reception, it was recently rented out.

Another option might be 10 Downing Street itself, which is well furnished with spacious state rooms and a large garden that could house hundreds of guests.

Save the date cards

If you want to give your guests the heads-up about your wedding, but it’s too early to send out invitations, emulate Boris and get in early with your save the date cards.

We love this gorgeous ‘Calligraphic’ floral card from the Vintage Signature Collection by Eden Stationery in Newtownards – pretty, but also up-to-date with its botanical look.

The Invite Hub in Kerry says Save the Date cards are not only useful for letting friends and family know what weekend they should reserve ahead of choosing your venue, but they’re a great way to give a new style a test run if you can’t decide between rustic, vintage or simple and elegant wedding stationery.

More gorgeously coloured botanicals, this time from Darling Stationery in Ballymena – this card will definitely get a second look.

Save the date cards are the first pieces of wedding stationery that detail the essentials, so, naturally, you want to get them right.

Just think of save-the-date’s as pre-invitations that let your guests know a few details about your wedding. But when should you send them, and what actually needs to be included – don’t panic, we’ve got you covered!

Ask The Expert

Working with a good designer can put your mind at ease. Brightlight Weddings offer a bespoke wedding service, with everything from stationery to videography. They will create a consistent visual impact across each platform, so you know your theme will flow through everything.

  • Research is so important! Put together a little mood board for your designer, with any fonts, styles or colours that jump out to you.
  • You could consider making your invitations personal, by potentially having your family members on it, your favourite sport, or another interest you both have.
  • The time of year also plays an important role, the flowers you choose, the colour of the bridesmaid dresses, you can carry this right through to the design of your stationery.
  • Trust the process – with Brightlight Weddings you can sit back, relax and watch your creative ideas come to life!

What information do we include?

Between travel arrangements and busy schedules, sending a save-the-date will increase guests’ chances of attending your celebration. If you would prefer to keep your chosen venue a surprise or just under wraps for longer, simply name the town or city you’ve picked. Destination weddings should include airlines/flight info.

What should they look like?

Design from Perfect Day Print

Your save the date cards don’t have to match all of your wedding stationery, but they should fit with the general wedding theme you’ve chosen.

When should we send them?

As a general rule, it’s best to start spreading the news around six months prior to the ceremony, or eight months for a destination/holiday weekend. This gives guests plenty of time to book their flights or necessary travel.

Who should I send them to?

Design from The Invite Hub

Save-the-date notifications should only be sent to those who you’re planning on inviting to the wedding. It’s best to compile and finalise your guest list before you send anything out.

What about plus-one’s?

If you know that you want one of your guests to bring a plus one at this stage, add this to your save the date card.

You can shop for your save the dates and wedding stationery using our online wedding directory – filled with Ireland’s hottest wedding suppliers!

The post How To Write The Perfect Thank You Card appeared first on Wedding Journal.

]]>
Once the wedding is over, there’s one more task left to do. Yes, it’s time to write your thank-you cards. Wondering where to start, we’re got you covered!

After the excitement of the wedding day and honeymoon is over, it’s time to start thanking all of the guests who took the time to celebrate such an important day with you.

While starting on your thank you cards can seem a daunting prospect, especially if you’ve had a large wedding, don’t neglect to send them.

InvitationEmporium, etsy.com

Your thank you cards are just as important as your wedding invites and once written and posted, they complete your wedding celebrations.

Where To Start

– Keep a good record of which guest gave you which gift. If you didn’t have the foresight to do this it could all become a bit more complicated!

– Personalise your thank you cards, hence the need for point 1. In other words, thank your guests for the specific gift you received from them and also allude to other more personalised words and phrases for each guest.

It’s best to handwrite your thank you cards. It shows that you have taken time and effort over them.

– Send them within three months of your wedding day. Any gifts that you receive after this time, make sure to send a prompt individual thank-you.

Wedding Thank You Card
Perfect Day Print

– Don’t forget to put the same effort into your thank you cards as you did with the rest of your wedding. We would suggest ordering your thank-you cards with the rest of your wedding stationery. Not only will they beautifully match everything that has been sent before, but it means you are ready to hit the ground running on this last task once the wedding is over. Don’t forget to order a few extra in case you need them for those who send late gifts. However, you might prefer to use a picture from the wedding and have cards printed with this to send out (remember to budget for these).

– Split the workload. As you can see there is a lot to do. Don’t feel as the bride that you need to write all of the thank you notes yourself. Enlist the help of your new husband, he was part of the day and in receipt of the gifts too! Maybe allocate writing five to ten thank you cards each evening while watching TV and you will soon start to get through them.

– Keep the tone relaxed. Remember, you are writing to friends and family so keep the tone light and don’t be afraid to be funny.

What to Write

Don’t worry, you aren’t writing the next copy of War & Peace, but at the same time you don’t want to miss anything out. Here’s what you should look to include in your thank you cards…

1. Firstly, thank your wedding guest for sharing your special day

2. Next, thank them for their gift

3. Include a line of how you intend to use the gift

4. Not essential, but if you can add a personal line, perhaps a shared joke from the wedding day.

5. Finish with well wishes

For Example…

Dear David & Caroline,

Thank you for travelling over from England to celebrate with us. It was lovely to see you both and the kids have got so grown up. Your generous gift to our honeymoon fund was much appreciated and we had a fantastic time on our helicopter ride over the GrandCanyon. We can’t wait to tell you all about our trip.

Lots of Love, Peter & Sandra

Wedding stationery may not seem as important as things like décor and dessert, but trust us, it definitely is.

When it comes to the wedding invitations, a lot of emphasis is put on how they will look but have you ever thought about what they should say?

This is your chance to reveal the ‘need to knows’ to the guests ahead of the big day, so follow this guide to make sure nothing is left out!

The style of your day will strongly set the tone of your invitations, so either have a clear vision of your overall style or be inspired by your resulting invitation! Couples nowadays incorporate their stationery, sent long before their special day, into their reception décor. From the table plan, seating list, menu showing each course and timeline of proceedings throughout the day; don’t be afraid to push the creative boundaries and add some personality too!

A wedding invite is very different from setting up a group chat on Facebook or WhatsApp! It’s time to get formal and include niceties associated with every wedding invitation!

Invitations are the first impression each guest will have of your special day!

Getting your wedding stationery right is the perfect way to ensure your big day is a stylish event from the start. The days of basic wedding invitations are over; couples are getting more creative and adventurous with their designs.

But how can you make sure your invites, save the dates and table plans are on-trend? Well look no further, you will find everything you need below to make sure your stationery is up-to-date and looking fabulous!

Navy is the new black

Rich and dark shades are the perfect partnership for any metallic.

Navy and black work particularly well, whereas deep reds or greens are especially effective for a winter wedding.

With typography picked out in silver or gold foil, the result is striking and sophisticated.

Romantic burgundies to midnight navies, they’re bold, unconventional, and strikingly emotive, we love how this trend effortlessly unites deep hues and with rich textures.

Watercolour

If the bold prints or dramatic designs are putting you off personalising your invitations, fear not. A more subtle and romantic effect to your invites could be the use of watercolour art.

They’re soft and elegant and can make a real impact depending on the colours you choose.

A watercolour wedding invitation can include a painting of the wedding venue or imagery that reflects the wedding’s destination, just like these designs from Perfect Day Print.

Monograms

Using a bold typeface to announce your initials allows you to keep things simple and elegant.

Monograms will feel relevant to almost any type of formal celebration, so consider using them when other options feel too fussy or over the top.

Monograms are a wonderful way of adding a personal touch, while keeping your invitations simplistic and classy.

We love this design by Perfect Day Print, if Kate and Wills can have a crest, why not you?

Geometric

This angular trend is sure to stay for a while. Facets, squares, triangles – any cornered shape, you name it.

Bold lines give correspondence a contemporary feel and a bit of edge.

Mix the graphics with bright colours to create an eye-catching design. This is a great example of how to mix trends together, Perfect Day Print have incorporated the geometric shapes with a pastel watercolour splash of colour.

This is perfect for a pattern-loving couple or for a non-traditional celebration.

Envelope Liners

An inner layer to your envelope will be the first thing guests will see when they excitedly tear open your invite. Liners are a great finishing touch and they add a pop of colour. If you prefer to keep your invitations simple, this is one effective way of adding some glamour. Pick from illustrations to floral scenes and watercolour designs.

A Day to Impress https://www.weddingjournalonline.com/a-day-to-impress/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-day-to-impress Mon, 08 Jan 2018 10:25:09 +0000 http://weddingjournalonline.com/?p=66001 How to make a lasting impression on your wedding day

The post A Day to Impress appeared first on Wedding Journal.

With couples now attending more and more weddings of friends and family, all with fresh new ideas, showstopping performances and unique decor, it is becoming increasingly difficult to impress guests on your wedding day.

At Wedding Journal we come to the rescue with ways to ensure your day, is one to remember. Follow our tips below on how to make a real and lasting impression for your guests…

Invites

The perfect place to start this is the first glimpse guests will get into the theme and style of your wedding day. Add a personal touch with motifs, significant quotes or monograms to show off your unique love story.

The Rings

These will stay with you all your married life so you want something which you both feel comfortable and happy with. Make sure the rings are unique to you by engraving them with a special message inside the ring or the date of the wedding.

The Décor

The reception is where most of your style will come through and be shown. Choose table settings and details to show off your personalities or tie in the interests you both have. Trends are great, of course, but personal details such as naming the tables destinations you’ve travelled to together or incorporating a favorite color will leave a lasting impression on guests and make your wedding day unique. A great way to keep the decor personalized is to try your hand at DIY projects for signs and favours or to incorporate significant items from past memories as a couple.

The Food

A wedding with great food is always one guests will remember! If the food is unique to your cultures, location or relationship then that alone will create a wedding day different from others that guests will never forget.

The Flowers

Flowers can be used in interesting ways to help depict the theme of a wedding. Colours and textures used as centerpieces for tables will set the mood. A unique and unusual bouquet for the bride or bridesmaids will leave a lasting image for guests.

Show off your love story

The easiest way to make your wedding day more unique is to share special memories together through photos. It also reminds guests of certain memories you have shared and brings the relationship full circle. If photos aren’t your thing then offer a glimpse into your lives with certain music selections, toasts or personalized vows.
