Looking for some stunning accessories to crank your bridal look up a notch? Check out these statement pieces to bring your wedding wardrobe to life!

You’ve found your dream gown and now it’s time to take your bridal look to the next level, so why not opt for some simple yet statement-making accessories to get you there?

RELATED TO: VIP WEEK: Win VIP Tickets To The Wedding Journal Show

We’ve chatted to many brides who want to change their look from ceremony to reception, but you don’t need a second dress! All you need is the right bridal accessories to renew your wedding wardrobe – so whether you’re looking for a simple sparkle or statement sleeves, here are a few details that will have you looking fresh from start to finish…

Veils

As seen in many recent celebrity weddings such as Ariana Grande, Lily Collins and Gwen Stefani, veils are back and we’re loving the drama they bring to your bridal look! Veil length, colour and pattern can change your wedding wardrobe in many different ways – for a more simple gown, we say add a cathedral veil with floral texture to really transform your style!

Headwear

Add a touch of sparkle to your wedding look with the help of dazzling headwear! Jewelled crowns or fascinators can change your wedding wardrobe instantly, giving it a fresh and modern look with a touch of vintage glam – we love this simple metallic crown from Deborah K Designs for some subtle sparkle.

Hair accessories

Like headwear, hair accessories are a simple yet effective way to ramp up your wedding look. Take these subtle pieces from Twilight Designs and Lie Amour for example – adding a touch of sparkle or floral elements can transform your bridal hairstyle and your wedding wardrobe all at once!

Jewellery

When it comes to bridal jewellery there are so many colors, metals, and styles to choose from, so a good place to start is your wedding theme. Look for jewellery to match the vibe you’re going such as classic, vintage, eclectic or boho. Whatever your aesthetic, one trend you can’t go wrong with is diamonds! Also, don’t be afraid to mix metals for an edgier look.

Belts

Adding a bling belt is the number one way to transforming your bridal style. This looks best with a more simple and minimalistic dress or with lace elements and adds a touch of glam and sparkle which can also tie in great with other shiny accessories to bring your whole look together!

Detachable elements

Detachable sleeves and capes are versatile wedding accessories for any bride. Adding these will transform your look instantly, giving you two dresses in one! We’re obsessed with these subtle yet statement sleeves by Morilee – you can add these at the reception to give you that extra WOW factor for the after party!

We’ve scoured the 2022 wedding dress catwalks – and these are the cute wedding dress details that will really make your look stand out.

What’s on trend for the 2022 wedding dress? We’ve checked out the latest collections as they appeared on the wedding catwalks – and there are some amazing looks out there!

Your wedding dress is going to be a once in a lifetime showstopper and that’s why you want to get every detail absolutely perfect – so that’s why we’ve picked out some of the finer details that will really set your look off.

Fringing

If fringing brings to mind a backyard US wedding complete with barbecue, think again. Some of the most eyecatching looks on the latest catwalk involved fringing, the latest iteration of the laid-back boho look, and nothing could be fresher! We adore this Coco dress from Awaken by Kate Fearnley and the Rowen boho wedding dress by All Who Wander, right.

Inside out

Some of the newest trends will see you wearing the inside on the outside to dramatic effect, including the boning and corsetry elements. We love this Hortense gown with corset bodice from Vera Wang Bride, left; and this glitter wedding dress with sheer corset bodice from Essense of Australia (style D3345), right.

Beading

Yes, beading is a mainstay of the bridal look but this time it’s not just the odd touch here and there – it’s the basis of the whole look. These two gorgeous gowns show how showstopping a wealth of beading can be – the crystal wedding dress (style 2380) by Morilee; and the Carson beaded long sleeve ball gown with Mikado skirt and pockets from Justin Alexander, bottom.

Asymmetrical draping

It’s amazing what a bit of folding can bring to the texture of a gown, such as this asymmetrically draped net wedding dress from Morilee (style 5108) and this asymmetrical wedding gown with beaded tulle (D3195) from Essense of Australia.

Rows of Buttons

There’s nothing as effective as a line of tiny, perfect buttons coiling up the back of a low-backed wedding dress, ideal for sweeping up the aisle. Get the look with this super slinky Alanis dress from Love by Enzoani, top row; and the gorgeously arresting rear view of this Anoushka dress from Gaia Bridal, bottom.

Sheer illusion

Illusion has been everywhere this year and that trend is only set to continue, with imaginative new ways to capitalise on the look – we love these beautiful and barely there styles. Atarah (style DP456 from Demetrios, left; and this sheath gown with delicate lace sleeves suspended from an invisible layer of illusion net (Style 9654) from Allure Bridals, right.

Introducing the newest bridal boutique on the block, Loralea Birdal, who just celebrated their open day on Saturday showcasing all their stunning styles and accessories.

We spoke to owners Lorraine Telfair and Leagh McQuiston, who also run LA Bridal House, about opening their brand new store in Carrickfergus and what brides-to-be can expect!

Lorraine tells us: “It was a brilliant day with a great turn out! Cate Conway from U105 went live with us and spent the day entertaining everyone and having a bit of craic with all our brides-to-be. Some of our past brides brought friends who are getting married, and everyone loved it!

“We had some drinks and Scotch Corner made a beautiful spread of food and it was an open house, so anyone was welcome – it was lovely to see so many new faces and we got a few appointments as well!”

With all the latest styles from designers such as Richard Designs, Special Day, Bianco Evento and Modeca, brides-to-be got a chance to see these stunning dresses come to life and add all the finishing touches.

Lorraine continues: “We were able to showcase some of our stock from dresses, veils, headpieces and jewellery and coverups. We try and make it a one stop shop – I’m upstairs doing the alterations and my daughter Maxine runs downstairs. She was our live mannequin for the day, showing how we can dress up a plain gown to look like a second dress for the after-party!

“I can talk brides through alterations and what can happen with a dress – whether they want to add a sleeve or a modest block. I can offer guidance and give them a little bit more confidence in buying their gown.

“The first dress we showcased was what we called our ‘Destination Dress’ by Modeca – it was lovely and light with a detailed bodice. Our second dress was the quirky tea-length 50s style dress by Richard Designs and another style by Special Day.

“Brides could also go through our railings and pick out anything that caught their eye. Some of the brides we’ve already sold to came down to try on their dress with their veils and accessories and really see them come to life!”

As well as a range of styles and sizes to choose from, Loralea Bridal also caters for a variety of budgets and offer expert advice to keep you on track in the lead up to the big day.

Lorraine says: “The budgets we talked about were from £500 to £1,000 with the designer Modeca and this was to help the brides that maybe don’t want to spend a lot on their dresses. We also talked about our payment plan of £100 deposit and six weeks to pay it off.”

Make sure to book your appointment with Loralea Bridal for a chance to find your dream dress. For more information, contact: loraleabridal@gmail.com

What’s the difference between mermaid and fit-and-flare anyway? Learn the wedding dress silhouettes before you start your dream dress search!

For every bride-to-be, the ring isn’t the only thing you’re going to say ‘YES’ to. One of the most exciting and important decisions to come next is the dress, and every detail counts – right down to the silhouette!

Don’t know all the wedding dress terminology just yet? (totally normal btw!) We’re here to give you a helping hand with a rundown of all the wedding dress silhouettes so you can find what best complements your style and shape.

RELATED TO: How to Choose The Best Wedding Dress Style For Your Body Shape?

As you browse, keep these rules in mind to prepare you for your bridal appointment…

 • A fitted column, mermaid or fit-and-flare gown will accentuate your curves (or create the illusion of them).
 • Pleats or gathers around the waist can magnify this area. A tight-fitted high-waist and loose skirt will combat this.
 • When in doubt, consider an A-line gown which works for almost any shape!

Ball Gown

Did someone say fairytale princess? Well that’s exactly what you get with the ballgown silhouette! Volume? Check. Drama? Check. Classic? Yes, of course! The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a full skirt and is ideal for most body types, but can be overwhelming on petite brides with small frames. Check out these stunning dresses from McElhinney’s of Ballybofey and La Bella Sposa for the ultimate princess gown!

Fit-and-Flare

If you’re looking for a style that shows off that gorgeous figure, this dress does just that! The fit-and-flare style is literally fitted through the body and flares out mid-thigh – ideal for brides looking to accentuate a small waist and it also works well with hourglass figures as well as petite body types. We love these figure-hugging styles from Romantique Bridal and The Wild Rose Boutique.

Mermaid

Similar to the fit-and-flare gown, this style is sleek and sexy and contours the body from the chest to the knee and is flared thereon. The silhouette is known to emphasize the waist and hips rather than narrowing it, especially if you’re apple-shaped. Accent your curves in these showstopping styles from Divinity Bridal and Angelo Bridal!

Find out more about Divinity Bridal HERE

Column

The column silhouette is a more toned-down version of the mermaid dress – think a narrow shape that flows straight down from the neckline to the hem with the flare starting mid-thigh. These dresses usually have a high neckline, hence the ‘column’ nickname, and are best suited to lean frames and athletic body types. They also work great with hourglass figures and for the brides who want to flaunt their curves. Steal the show in one of these gorgeous dresses from Amsha Bridal and The Bridal Company NI.

A-line

This silhouette is a universal favorite as it complements almost every body type. Feminine and oh-so-flattering, this style of gown cinches you at the waist and flares out into a beautiful full skirt – giving you a princess feel, but with less structure and more flow. This is a great choice for pear-shaped or curvy brides. We love these styles from The One and White Gold Bridal!

Tea-Length

This is the perfect style if you’re looking for that ‘something old, something new’ feel. This ankle-grazing silhouette is giving us all the vintage vibes and is perfect for the fashion-forward and unconventional bride. With a hemline that falls above the knee, it’s elegant, girly and a little bit different – and best of all, it looks just as good on a slim frame as a curvy one. Get inspired with these styles from Orchid Bridal Studio and Marie Me Bridal.

Lighter than air silhouettes are hugely popular with brides at the moment – here are some of our favourite looks!

Light and delicate are the watchwords at the moment, with designers using English net, soft chiffons and floating organzas to tremendous effect to create a light and ethereal look.

Travel light and be ready to elope at any moment with a soft barely there look that will see you swishing your way up the aisle.

Soft and floral

This A-line floral English net dress from Lillian West (style 66184) has an unlined bodice showcasing ruched English net that delicately crisscrosses over the bodice. Sequined floral lace peeks out from underneath the dreamy English net overlay and the sexy skirt features a subtle slit on the lining layer. It’s complete with a chapel length train that allows for effortless movement – check the video to see how it moves!

Swishing skirt

The first images of this delicately dotted Lottie gown have just been released by Mark Lesley and we have fallen hopelessly in love!

Demure flounces

This Clara wedding dress (style 5916) from Morilee is a breath of fresh air. The A-line silhouette floats off the body and the boho-inspired lace bodice provides dainty detail. The frilly, flounced hemline makes this gown perfect for the free-spirited bride.

Filmy Overskirts

We’re seeing designers adding fine overskirts to their gowns, which means that not only are they adding some delicate textural elements to the outfit, but providing options for two looks in one. This dress, style 4959 from Paloma Blanca, features a sheer lace bodice, lined in natural Italian tulle, with a V-neckline and a low-cut back, and includes a removable side slit organdy overskirt that has been designed to move beautifully with your body as you walk down the aisle. The skirt is fully removable revealing the striking knee-length lace skirt underneath – the perfect day-to-night lightweight look and ideal for destination weddings.

Illusion Elements

Instead of heavy silks, we’re now seeing more designers making use of illusion lace or tulle to convey a delicate look as you sweep down the aisle. We love this soft and pretty look, style 9806 from Allure Bridals, with lacy flowers trailing trail down the illusion sleeves and bodice of this romantic gown.

Brides in Ireland are booking themselves in for fun weekend breaks focused on finding that perfect wedding dress – and then celebrating with a night out!

Angel Star Bridal in Belfast has identified the latest post-lockdown hospitality trend – the wedding dress weekend break.

Owner Gittan says the Lisburn Road store has been inundated with brides, many from the Republic, treating themselves to a weekend away to track down that perfect wedding gown, and celebrate their purchase with a meal and night in a hotel.

“They’re coming up for the weekend, staying overnight in a hotel, having a meal out and enjoying themselves,” she says.

“Most of them make an appointment – first they buy the dress and then go out, have a meal and make a celebration of it.”

With Covid restrictions now more relaxed in Northern Ireland, the region is becoming a magnet for brides-to-be who are determined to go ahead with their weddings after the lengthy lockdowns and are looking for a good choice of dresses.

“They don’t care whether they’re going to have six guests or 106 guests at their wedding. They’ve been waiting for so long now, and when they come here they’ve made the decision that their wedding is going to go ahead, no matter what,” Gittan says.

“Some of them want to get the dress very quickly – maybe somebody is not well in the family and they just want to have the wedding. We have good suppliers who will work with us and are able to get the dresses in a very short period of time.”

Return To Romance

After such a long period of time, Gittan is seeing a pushback against the austerity and restrictions of lockdown, with brides visiting Angel Star Bridal opting for super-romantic, dramatic styles of wedding dress.

“At the moment, anything goes. We’re finding a lot of the girls are looking for ballgowns because they’ve been in lockdown for so long,” she says.

“They just want to celebrate – they like the glitter and sparkles, they like the romantic dresses, they like the off-the-shoulder looks.

“There are a lot of lace dresses coming in now, but it’s going towards more beaded dresses with a crochet lace look – the girls love that.

“As for sleeves, sometimes it’s the bigger they are the better, with a nice big cuff at the bottom and lots of detail like bling and pearls.

“The new trend coming into the shops is the fit and flare look which is just magnificent – curved in at the waist and rounded at the hips – whichever way you turn, that lovely silhouette is there.

“And there are a lot of lovely lace veils at the moment – the longer the veil, the better. I make all my veils here to complement the dresses, as well as bespoke headdresses.”

Socially Distanced Showroom

Brides are respectful of the store’s Bride Plus Two rule and the requirement to wear face masks in the shop. With 3,500 sq, the showroom is large and airy, making it easy and inviting to socially distance.

“We are very careful about looking after our brides and everybody else,” Gittan says.

“When a bride comes in, she has the shop to herself for two hours, and if she doesn’t find anything on the ground floor, she heads up to the next floor. We have 400 dresses in all shapes and sizes and styles, and I carry out all my own alterations here in the shop.”

Curvy Gowns

At Angel Star Bridal, curvier brides have just as much choice as everyone else, she says.

“What you buy in a size 10 dress, you can get in size 30. People think because they’re curvy they will have a very small choice of dress but they have exactly the same choice as the skinny styles.”

Angel Star Bridal stocks gowns from brand leaders such as Mark Lesley, Donna Salado, Grace Philips, House of Mooshki, Phoenix Gowns, Envy and many more.

The store is also a one-stop-shop for the bridal party with a wide range of styles and colours of bridesmaid dresses from Mark Lesley.

“And lots of brides are going for strong colours at the moment – we’re seeing lots of bold and beautiful colours – cinnamon, strong pinks, blues. They feel like they’ve been locked up for so long that they want to celebrate now, and they want to be seen!”

Kirsty and David first met six years ago through a mutual friend at university and it wasn’t long before they went on their first date and sparks began to fly.

“David organised for us to go to Belfast Zoo. We were only supposed to go to the zoo but ended up going to the cinema afterwards just so that we didn’t have to leave each other,” Kirsty shares.

It seemed to be love at first sight for David who nervously waited for Kirsty to arrive.

“Kirsty actually got lost on the way there and was 20 minutes late,” he laughs. “So, I thought I was getting stood up, but it all turned around from there and it’s been smooth sailing ever since.”

With Kirsty living in Lisburn and David being from Ballymoney, the two worked hard to stay connected.

“With the distance when we first started dating, David would come and stay for the weekends so we could spend more time with together,” Kirsty explains.

David adds: “I was still living in Ballymoney for the first year and a half and then got a job in Belfast, so after this I was able to visit more and eventually we got engaged. We bought a house together in Lisburn about two years ago.”

THE PROPOSAL

In 2018 after a little debating on location and a few mishaps, it was the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas where David popped the question.

“We were on holiday at the time and I was bringing the engagement ring around everywhere with me because I wasn’t sure where I wanted to propose,” David recalls.

“I actually took it out at the Hoover Dam at first and accidentally left it on the bus, but thankfully nobody stole it!”

And if that wasn’t lucky enough, Kirsty said a big ‘YES’ when David finally decided on proposing in the stunning Stratosphere Tower.

“It was just perfect. The next day we went to relax at Top Golf for food and drinks as David was a bit up tight all holiday planning the proposal,” Kirsty laughs.

“He actually proposed towards the end of the holiday too because he knew I’d be dying to get home to celebrate with the family – they all threw a small surprise party for us as soon as we arrived back in the country!”

THE PLANNING PROCESS

Kirsty and David took planning matters into their own hands and had everything set for Manor House in Enniskillen last year, but of course COVID-19 had other plans. “We originally had the wedding booked for September 3rd 2020, but we didn’t realise the pandemic would drag on so long,” Kirsty explains.

“Then when it came around to our new date in March, Manor House wasn’t able to take us, so we had to do a quick venue change to Millbrook Lodge Hotel in Ballynahinch just four weeks before the wedding!”

The pandemic may have caused a few issues, but this didn’t stop the lovely couple from having the perfect day and starting their new chapter.

“It was definitely a bit of a debate and we were even thinking of postponing it again, but after everything going on, we just wanted to be married and finally become Mr and Mrs, so we’re so happy we went ahead with it,” Kirsty says.

“We had always wanted a more intimate wedding anyway and with only 24 people, it felt very cosy and relaxed.”

DREAM WEDDING SUPPLIERS

“We really hit the jackpot with our suppliers,” Kirsty shares. “They were all great and very flexible with us and our changes. They really bent over backwards to accommodate us.”

For flowers and venue styling, Kirsty and David decided on McGarry Wedding Design in Enniskillen, and went for a bohemian, nature inspired theme.

“I wanted a neutral bouquet, so we chose white roses and larger white flowers with lots of greenery to tie in with the boho style,” she says.

“We had a large floral arch that matched the flowers and green foliage was laid down the aisle with candles everywhere – all my Pinterest goals came to life!”

After putting out their save the dates, the couple had to get a little creative with some DIY invitations.

“We got white and green watercolour foliage save the dates from Papier online, but when our date changed, we made our own virtual invitations using Canva which we really enjoyed and it felt much more personal” Kirsty shares.

The wedding cake from The Hillsborough Baker was one thing David couldn’t wait to get his hands on. “We went for a two-layer cake – one layer was Victoria sponge and the other was Kinder Bueno as it’s David’s favourite.”

Despite the sudden venue change, Kirsty and David were able to create their dream wedding at the Orangerie in the Millbrook Lodge Hotel. “This was their smaller venue which was perfect for our intimate wedding,” Kirsty shares.

RELATED TO: 10 Alternative Wedding Cake Ideas That Will Make You Drool

“We dealt with Gerty at Millbrook who was a great help with the last-minute venue change and nothing was too much hassle. We thought about wedding planners but in the end myself and mum planned the whole thing and I feel like I loved seeing everything come together on the day!”

CAPTURING THE DAY

Gabrielle and Dearbhaile from POP Photography in Antrim put Kirsty and David at ease with a pre-wedding photoshoot warm-up.

“We did a little shoot before the day and they were just brilliant and made us feel more natural in front of the camera,” Kirsty says. “It helped a lot because we got to know what poses to do and feel more comfortable for when the day arrived,” David adds.

The couple even got some creative candids and passed on a new wedding photo trend.

“I found the confetti picture idea on Pinterest, and I thought a pop of colour would add a nice touch to our photos!” Kirsty explains.

“When the photographers posted it on their Instagram, everyone went crazy for it! We even had some left-over confetti which we let the photographers take to their next weddings and it carried on from there.”

Kirsty and David got some more shots back at their parents’ home before heading to Newcastle beach for some more chilled candids to end the day.

WEDDING WARDOBE

Kirsty rocked an ivory boho Martina Liana dress from Blush Boutique on the Lisburn Road, Belfast.

“It was a bodice style and it also had pockets which was a big selling point for me!” Kirsty said.

“I fell in love with it straight away – it had a long train and was covered in embroidered flowers which matched the theme of the wedding really well.”

Caren from Seams Perfect in Belfast pulled the whole look together making alterations for both the bride and bridesmaid gowns.

“The girls at Blush recommended her as she used to design wedding gowns. She was just incredible and really helped us out!” Kirsty explains.

The bridesmaid dresses from Reflection Bridal in Belfast all cleverly matched Kirsty’s showstopping gown.

“We decided on a burgundy floaty style that each had a crossover at the back that matched the back detailing on my dress,” Kirsty says.

The groom and groomsmen suits were decked out in Remus Uomo suits from McCalls of Lisburn, pulling the whole colour scheme together.

“Although our flowers were cream and white with greenery, the groomsmen wore matching navy suits with burgundy ties and check designs which tied everything in,” Kirsty adds.

EATING & DRINKING

“We wanted something more laid back, so we all got burgers delivered to our parents’ house from Jersey Street Grill in Lisburn,” Kirsty explains.

“It was very much inspired by a favourite Youtuber of mine, Jamie Genevieve, who had an iconic picture of herself eating McDonald’s in her wedding dress, so we recreated that picture of us all eating burgers at the house after the wedding!”

Although Covid may have restricted the couple’s original plans, it didn’t make for any less of a celebration.

“The only thing we really lost out on was a reception, but we had our social bubble come back to the house for our favourite food and sorted our own drinks and looking back we wouldn’t change anything about it,” David says.

FAVOURITE MOMENT

David had been bracing himself for weeks for the moment he would get to see his beautiful bride walking down the aisle. “My favourite moment was seeing Kirsty walking towards me and getting to see how beautiful she looked in her dress, that really made me feel like a lucky guy,” he gushes.

“I made sure I didn’t cry though because I can be a bit of an ugly crier, but it was hard to keep it together!”

For Kirsty, her favourite moment was finally getting to celebrate as husband and wife.

“When we had our rings on and just knowing that’s us now, we’re finally married was amazing,” she shares. “Then going for our photos together after just made me feel like a million dollars!”

Finding the perfect wedding dress is a little easier when you know what to look for – here’s which dress styles will work best for your body shape.

When you’re on the hunt for your dream wedding dress, you want something that is figure flattering and shows off all your best assets. Whether you have an hourglass, triangle or oval body shape, there’s a dress style out there that is perfect for you.

We know wedding dress shopping can feel a bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack – with so many different styles, shapes and sizes to choose from, it’s hard to know where to begin.

So, to help you narrow down the search, we’ve done a little digging to find out which styles are the most flattering for your body type and what trends you want to avoid…

READ OUR LATEST MAGAZINE ISSUE – JAN FEB 2023 DIGITAL ISSUE

The Hourglass

Brides with an hourglass body shape normally have a more defined waist, wider hips and a bigger bust. You’re very curvaceous and have one of the most desirable body shapes there is, so let’s look at the best styles to show off your curvaceous assets.

Avoid: Your bust and hips are already perfectly balanced, so it’s best not to add any extra weight to these areas. Stay away from ball gown, empire or princess-style dresses with fuller skirts, as this may make you appear bigger in these areas and will be less flattering to your shape.

RELATED TO: In Praise of the Plus Size Gown

Look for: Instead, look for dresses that hug and show off those gorgeous curves such as a silhouette or mermaid style. Also, a sweetheart or plunge neckline may work better for you than a halter or high neck dress, as this will keep you balanced out and flatter your bustier assets.

The Pear Shape

If you have a pear body shape, you tend to have hips that are wider than your bust area and a defined waist. You may have very feminine neck and shoulders and be smaller in the chest area with a petite and narrow build.

Avoid: It’s best not to go for empire dress styles as they may hide your dainty figure and can create the illusion that you are bigger in size than you are in reality.

Look for: Wedding dresses that are more fitted to your shape such as a sleek silhouette or fishtail/mermaid dress. Sleeved dresses are also a good option to balance out your smaller shoulders with your wider hips.

The Triangle Shape

If your shoulders and upper body are proportionally bigger than your lower body, then you probably have a triangle shape. You may have broad shoulders with a slimmer waist and smaller hips, giving you a column shape.

Avoid: Stay clear from strapless, off-the-shoulder or halter neck dresses as this can highlight your wider shoulders and may have you looking out of proportion.

RELATED TO: Steal Their Style: Celebrity Inspired Wedding Dresses

Look For: Opt for a symmetrical or v-neck style as this works perfectly with the inverted triangle shape. Fuller straps and sleeves also flatter your figure and make your shoulders look more subtle. You may also want to look for dresses with more detail such as lace or embellishments as this will help you appear broader and more fully balanced.

The Oval Shape

The oval body shape, which is often referred to as apple, is seen on brides who have a larger bust, narrow hips and a fuller torso area. You have a more rounded shape midsection and tend to have slender legs and arms.

Avoid: Halter or high neck gowns run the risk of drowning you out in the chest area and give your other areas little to no definition. Stay clear of dresses that draw attention to your waist and pleat patterns as they are less flattering for your figure.

RELATED TO: What Shapewear Do You Need For The Perfect Bridal Silhouette?

Look for: Look for styles that have a subtle or straight shape such as an empire or A-line dress. These styles, with flared skirts that flow through the waistline, will give the illusion of a curvier and more balanced shape. Dresses with lower necklines and more detail on the chest area will also draw the eye upwards and away from the fuller midsection area of your body.

The Rectangle Shape

Brides who have a rectangle body type, which is also called the banana shape, have a straighter figure with shoulders, waist and hips being all within the same width. You may also be tall, have little waist definition and a smaller bust.

Avoid: Try to avoid figure hugging dresses such as mermaid, fishtail or silhouette styles as this will highlight your straight shape and give you less definition. Also, high necklines may make you appear longer and less balanced in shape.

Look for: A-line, empire, ball gowns and princess-style dresses are your go-tos – these styles with a fuller bottom will help bring more definition to your shape and create the illusion of a curvier figure.

Flower Power

We’re talking subtle and pastel, edgy and oversized or even in the form of textural, 3-D embroideries, this nod to summer will add whimsical charm to any wedding dress silhouette and is a solid choice for brides who like a natural, ethereal vibe. This kind of gown is particularly suited for an outdoor wedding, but really it’s versatile enough to work for any kind of big day. Consider teaming it with one of these whimsical hair dos here.

Puffy Sleeves

Inspired by the 80s, we’re obsessed with over-sized sleeves! Don’t panic, these ruffled and off-the-shoulder versions are all about tasteful romance. If you love this look but aren’t ready to fully commit, go for detachable ones you can take off for your reception or after-party.

Courthouse Chic

So many bridal brands are now launching ready-to-wear civil wedding dresses, designed specifically with a more intimate wedding in mind. Perfect for brides who are saying ‘I do’ in 2020 and partying a few months later – thanks Coronavirus!

Clever Corsetry

This look is perfect for the fashion-forward bride, it’s sensual without being too sexy. Paired with sheer tulle, delicate lace, and loads of layering for a regal vibe with major edge.

Trousers

We love this trend as it comes in all shapes and styles. From the chic seventies flare to the sharp cigarette pants. High-waisted trousers will hide a multitude of sins, or you can choose cropped trousers if you have a pair of killer heels to flaunt. You can add a flirty attachable skirt for added drama – it’s the best of both worlds – or even opt for a jumpsuit if that’s your style.

How to choose a wedding dress that’s right for you

So now that you’re all clued up on the incoming wedding dress trends for 2021, how do you go about finding ‘the one’ that’s right for you?

Start early

Some brides underestimate just how early they need to begin shopping for a wedding dress. Ideally, you’ll want to be getting into boutiques around 9 to 12 months before your big day. This is to allow adequate time for your dress to be ordered in and for any alterations you may need to have made. It helps if you have already booked your wedding venue too, as this will likely influence the kind of dress you decide on.

Gather inspo

Instagram, Pinterest, real weddings… there are loads of places you can gather inspiration for your dream dress. It’s best to keep any images in one place, i.e on a Pinterest board, Instagram Archive or in designated folder in your phone’s camera roll. Once you’ve added a wide selection of dresses you can begin the eliminating process to get a clearer idea of what you like.

Know what you like and what you don’t

Here’s where a good old fashioned list comes in handy! While gathering inspo, jot down what you like as you go, and make a note of what’s a big no no. The clearer you are on the type of dress you want, the easier it’ll be to communicate that to your shop assistant when you go to a boutique.

Be open

While it’s great to know what you want, we reckon it’s always good to try on a wildcard or two as well. You might be super clear on the kind of dress you’d like, but it’s smart to try on a few alternatives. You never know, you could be surprised at how good they look on, and if not, then at least you can rule it out for definite.

Don’t bring everyone you know

The saying ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ could also apply to wedding dress shopping. Too many opinions can be overwhelming for a bride and turn dress shopping into a negative experience. Bring along a small selection of people who know and love you and will gently give you their honest opinions.

Try on between four and seven dresses

Try on too many dresses and you risk feeling overwhelmed. Try on too few and you may worry you chose prematurely. Between four and seven dresses is generally considered the sweet spot when it comes to trying on wedding dresses. It’s a good enough selection to figure out what looks good on you and hopefully find ‘the one’ without getting bogged down.

Don’t be too swayed by the trends

We know, we know, we’ve just written an article on trends, but here’s the thing: ultimately, you want to choose a dress that’s true to your own personal style. It’s good to keep up to date with what’s considered stylish, but choosing a dress that reflects you is what’s important. If you’ve never liked tulle or think puff sleeves should stay in the 80s, that’s okay. Go for the gown that you know you’ll feel most comfortable in and feels the most ‘you’.

The post Dress To Impress: Get The Body To Suit Your Wedding Dress appeared first on Wedding Journal.

]]>
Between exercise and workouts, diets and non-surgical treatments, we have the low-down on how to get the perfect body to match your wedding dress!

Remember the saying – Vera doesn’t fit you, you fit Vera – by Vera we are referring to Vera Wang and her designer wedding dresses but whether Vera Wang or not, we all worry about look good in whatever wedding dress we choose. So what type of exercise, diet or non-surgical treatment should you consider pursuing to make sure you look and feel your best, whatever style of dress you wear> Here are five popular styles of dresses to make sure you have the perfect plan!

Backless

(L-R, Calliope from Ronald Joyce, Stlye BE476 from Ella Rosa and Jade from Lihi Hod.)

Using a rowing machine as part of your cardio work out at the gym will help tone and sculpt your arms, ensuring they will be perfectly showcased in your strapless wedding dress. Side planks are also a great work out. Start in a straight-arm side plank, your body forming a line from head to feet. With a weight in your free hand, lift your arm to the ceiling and lower it to your side. Switch sides and repeat.

Diet

To eliminate the build-up of back fat, consider upping your fibre intake. Snacking on oats, whole grain bread, brown rice and legumes will help slow digestion and curbs your appetite, preventing absorption of fat. To curb your calorie consumption while still satisfying your hunger, fill at least half your plate dinnertime with vegetables.

Recommended non-surgical treatment

If you chose to go down the non-surgical route, a great treatment to reduce fat in the upper arms is CoolSculpting. A non-invasive fat reduction procedure that involves no anaesthesia, needles, or incisions, it’s based on the principle of cooling subcutaneous fat to the point that the fat cells are destroyed by the cooling process and absorbed by the body.

Mermaid

(L-R Letizia from Sareh Nouri Letizia, Harper from Donna Salado and Whitley by Allison Webb)

Exercise

Squats are a great way to get a more rounded and taut bum. To start, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, keep your chest up and face forward. Sit down slowly into an imaginary chair and push up, focusing on engaging the muscles in your bum and make sure your heels stay on the floor throughout!

Diet

To get a rounder and firmer bum, add more fish and protein to your diet. Fish is loaded with protein and healthy fats such as omega-3-fatty acids. Include salmon, tuna, mackerel, haddock and anchovies, in your meals to get a good dose of protein.

Recommended non-surgical treatment:

For a perfectly round bum, consider having a Brazilian Bum Lift. A safe and clinically proven way to reduce fatty deposits and cellulite while tightening and shaping the skin, Brazilian Bum Lifts use tri-polar radio frequencies in combination with a vacuum roller, which effortlessly penetrate layers of subcutaneous fat, contouring your buttocks, while tightening the skin and reducing cellulite.

A-line

(L-R Dorothy by Kelly Faetanini, Nina by Ines di Santo and Style 44168 from Sincerity.)

Exercise:

Since A-line wedding dresses focus on the waist and tummy area, consider doing basic crunches. Lie face-up on the floor with your legs hip-width apart and knees bent 45 degrees. Place your hands behind your head, but do not place your fingers. Lift toward the ceiling until your shoulders leave the ground. Exhale on the way up and concentrate on pulling your belly button down toward your spine. Keep your chin lifted and make sure you’re not pulling on your neck.

Diet:

Following a low-carb diet is an effective way to lose weight around the tummy area. Try to eliminate or drastically reduce your intake of all starchy carbs and sugars, which will lead to a reduction in body fat, bloating and water weight.

Recommended non-surgical treatment:

To help reduce fat around the waistline, LipoContrast is an effective non-invasive fat reduction treatment. It delivers rapid results by heating, cooling and heating the fat cells through a 3 step cycle, this reduces body fat without damage or invasive methods.33% of the treated fat tissue will be eliminated and gradually breaks down through the metabolic system. Approximately 80% of the final result will be visible within 20 days.

Sweetheart Neckline

(L-R Roxanne from Morilee, Style 9708F from Allure Bridal and Lullaby from Charlotte Balbier.)

Exercise:

If a sweetheart neckline dress is your style of choice, consider doing push-ups which will help build definition in the arm, shoulder, neck and chest area. Start by lying flat on the floor face down, with hands shoulder-width apart. Cross your ankles and bend your knees. Line up the neck and spine down to your knees. A variation in the set-up would be to extend the legs straight so the weight is on your toes rather than your knees.

Diet:

To help reduce fat around your shoulder, neck and chest area, eat more leafy green vegetables such as kale, spinach and collards. They are perfect for a weight loss diet thanks to being low in calories and carbohydrates and loaded with fibre. Also, consider cups of green tea which helps increase the number of calories you burn.

Recommended non-surgical treatment:

Since sweetheart neckline dresses expose the upper arm and shoulder area, CoolSculpting would be a great option if you want to reduce fat in those areas.

Thigh-Split Dress

(L-R, Lexi Elm by Anna Campbell, Tressin from Herve Paris and Darling from Grace Loves Lace.)

Exercise

If you’re wearing a leg-baring dress with a sexy slit, lateral jumping lunges will help define your quads and calves. Step out to the right and shift your body weight over your right leg, squatting to a 90-degree angle at the right knee. Try to sit down with your bum, keeping your back as upright as possible. Exhale, push off and bring your right leg back to the centre to complete one rep. Finish all reps on this side, and repeat on the left side to complete one set.

Diet:

To reduce thigh fat, steer clear of refined carbs and sugar and instead eat more high-quality lean proteins such as seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes. Opt for fat-free or low-fat dairy products and avoid highly processed foods whenever possible.

Recommended non-surgical treatment:

Want to show off your legs but fed up with cellulite? Consider Cellulaze Laser Therapy which uses minimally invasive means to reduce cellulite. The procedure consists of inserting a very small tube and laser fibre which delivers energy directly under the skin. The laser energy melts the fat and releases the fibrous bands that pull down on the skin that causes that annoying dimpled appearance, all while promoting collagen production.

Meet The Designer

As designer Alden Misolas states, ‘For decades, women with a fuller figure have been treated as an entirely different species of shopper. And also in bridal, there was even a special set of ‘rules’ with ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’. For us at Modeca, these stereotypes are rather more amusing than useful. As a bride you simply want to feel beautiful. You want to feel gorgeous and a bit sexy on your most important day – no matter what!’

Curvy Bride
Delmar from Curves by Modeca

‘Giving the bride exactly this feeling – that she can be gorgeous with curves – is what truly counts,’ adds Alden. ‘And that is what we can make happen with our 2019 Curves by Modeca collection. Flattering A-line, ballgown or mermaid silhouettes as well as fashion-forward illusion necklines create shaping styles with a clever inside design to let the bride feel secure and comfortable, whilst enhancing her beautiful curves.’

Figure Flattering Wedding Dress To Suit You https://www.weddingjournalonline.com/figure-flattering-wedding-dress-to-suit-you/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=figure-flattering-wedding-dress-to-suit-you Tue, 14 May 2019 11:27:15 +0000 https://www.weddingjournalonline.com/?p=91137 Find the perfect fit from Modeca’s new collection

The post Figure Flattering Wedding Dress To Suit You appeared first on Wedding Journal.

]]>
We spoke to the experts from Modeca who recommend finding your dream dress by figuring out what works for your body shape.

There are so many gorgeous wedding dress styles that is is hard to know where to start sometimes. Obviously you will have a style preference in mind, whether you prefer to opt for a timeless, classical dresses, a more bohemian look, pretty vintage or edgy and contemporary. However, the best place to start is with what its your body shape.

You often hear brides saying that the wedding dress they wore wasn’t the dress they had in mind when they began their search. This is because what actually suits when you try a dress can be very different to your expectations.

So, with this in mind here are a selection of figure flattering wedding dresses from Modeca’s new collection that will be the perfect starting point.

Fit & Flare

Classic, yet sexy all at the same time, the fit and flare gown is perfect for accentuating curvy figures. Yes, ladies if you have hips don’t hide them under layers of tulle, flaunt them in a form fitting dress that flares out from the knee to perfectly balance your proportions.

Modeca Wedding Dress
Feather

Feather is a beautiful gown with pretty floral detailing on the bodice and down towards the knees, before flaring out into a romantic tulle skirt. The plunging neckline and back also adds to the impact of this stunning gown.

Ballgown

The ballgown or princess wedding dress as it is also referred to is classic and timeless with a fitted bodice and a full skirt. This dress shape suits every body type, and is especially good for flattering the waist and hips.

If you wish to show more of your bust, arms and shoulders then you can look at strapless necklines or spaghetti straps, but should you want more coverage, look at cap, mid-length or full-length sleeves and higher necklines.

Modeca Wedding Dress
Finley

Finley is the romantic ballgown you dream off of wearing on your wedding day! The floaty cap sleeve is perfect if you want to have some coverage over the top of the arm. The overall embellishment and detailing on this dress is so feminine, yet the plunging neckline and back keep things edgy and contemporary at the same time.

Off-The Shoulder

These dress really suit lean, petite figures and this body type tends to go hand in hand with defined collarbones and upper arms, which look lovely when they’re captured inside an off-the-shoulder neckline.

Modeca Wedding Dresses
Federica

Federica is all about the neckline and a pretty lace and embellished belt around the waist is all of the detail that is needed to bring it to life.

Column

If you are petite and want to elongate your figure, a column dress can add length to your look. Simplicity is always a good thing if you’d rather not feel swamped in fabric.

Modeca Wedding Dress
Farah & Filipa

While Farah harkens back to the iconic style of Studio 54, Filipa offers beautiful detailing with sheer embellished sleeves and a waistband.

This will hopefully help as you begin your search for the perfect dress, but it really does take you to try different styles and see what is the perfect fit for you.

The post Why Two Wedding Dresses Are Better Than One appeared first on Wedding Journal.

]]>
Two wedding dresses were once solely reserved for the celebrity or high end wedding, but many of today’s brides are indulging in this bridal trend.

Yes, one of the biggest bridal trends is buying two wedding dresses to change up your look from ceremony to reception.

Why Choose Two Wedding Dresses?

As bridal buyer Richie from McElhinneys Bridal Rooms comments, ‘Often brides can’t decide on the specific look that they want for the wedding day, so if their budget allows for two dresses they can have the best of both worlds! For example, a bride may love the idea of a romantic ball skirt for her ceremony, but she may want a fitted skirt or shorter style for the reception.’

Gittan from Angel Star adds, ‘For some brides, the dress they dream of wearing from the ceremony may have heavy beading or a long train and it might prove awkward to wear all day, so they will look to change their dress and wear one that allows them to dance the night away at the evening reception.’

Two wedding dresses are better than one
L-R: Dare to Bare: Do you love the sheer illusion trend, but feel it is too risky for the ceremony? If you are a bold bride who would like to wear a more risky dress like Hierba from Pronovias, then change for your evening reception; Colour Change: Maybe you would like a second dress to wear a tradition ivory gown for the ceremony, but change to a coloured wedding dress for the reception such as the golden Oralie dress from Savin London

Take a closer look at these gorgeous fishtail and mermaid dresses

When Do You Change?

The best time to change your wedding dress from the ceremony to the reception is after the photographs and before dinner. However, you might like to keep your ceremony dress on throughout dinner and then change your look for the evening reception and ‘wow’ guest with your new look for the first dance. It really all depends on your own personal preference and the style of dress you are changing into. Just make sure you aren’t holding up proceedings and change at a time when guests are mingling. Be sure to also touch up your make-up (you might want to change to a bolder lipstick) and possibly get your hair restyled for your second look.

Two wedding dresses are better than one
L-R: Take The Plunge: Again the ceremony may not be the time for a plunging neckline, but your evening reception will allow you to vamp it up in a dress like Rosa from Jenny Packham; we also love this halter neck Clarissa fit and flat gown from Ronald Joyce

For some brides two wedding dresses might not come within budget, however, with many designers now offering versatile dresses designs with overskirts, detachable sleeves or capelets, then having two dresses becomes more achievable because you are only really purchasing one dress but enjoying the versatility of two looks.

Two wedding dresses in one
Two in One: Nurit from Enzoani offers two gorgeous looks in one. A full-length gown, it features a curve-hugging mermaid dress underneath a dreamy, detachable A-line skirt with sparkling beaded belt which can be removed for later in the day.

Is This The Trend For You?

Whether you want two completely different bridal looks that include two separate wedding dresses, or if you just want to add on or remove layers between your wedding and reception, there are definitely options that will suit your budget and allow you to switch up your look between ceremony and reception.

Dresses for the curvier bride have stormed catwalks for the last few seasons, as more designers are recognising the growing demand of bridal looks to suit the curvier shape.

We take a look at what shapes and styles are out there this season, so you don’t have to!

Ballgown

Guaranteed to make any bride feel like royalty, this style is the perfect choice for ladies who want to highlight their chest and cleavage while minimising attention on their lower half.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Shauna Lynette from Maggie Sottero / Style 6432+ from Stella York

We love ballgowns that featuring layers of tulle, lace and embellished details. Be careful not to over-accessorise with this look, let the dress do the talking.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Style Number 3252 from Morilee / Macey Lynette Curve from Rebecca Ingram

The ballgown is one of the most comfortable wedding dresses you can get married in. As long as the fit is correct, trust us, you won’t want to take this dress off.

Mermaid

A sexy, seductive and stylish way to show off your body on the big day. Not only do mermaid (or fishtail) gowns feature a fitted silhouette to smooth out any troublesome areas, the careful skirt placement emphasises an hourglass shape.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Miri Plus from Pronovias / Style 88051 from Justin Alexander

When it comes to the neckline think strapless, or for added support try cap sleeves. Closely fitted from the chest down, a mermaid dress shoots outwards at the knee for an eye-catching flare.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Kris from Studio Levana / Style 119251W from Martin Thornburg

For plus-size brides, they are the ideal shape to create a natural curve in your body which mimics the gown.

V-Neck

Many curvier brides want to highlight their best asset on their big day – their cleavage.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Style 88021 from Justin Alexander / Style 3251 from Morilee

Low cut wedding dresses are a sexy choice, women want to use their day as an opportunity to wear a dress they would normally not get to wear.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Phaedra from WTOO by Watters / TC-W402 fro True Curves

If going for a deep V on its own is too daring for you , combine this with a sleeve perhaps to guarantee everything stays in place as you walk down the aisle.

Sheer

One thing we love about plus-size dresses is that many feature seductive sheer panels on the sleeves, necklines and waist of the gown.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Style 119282AW from Martin Thornburg / TC-W400 from True Curves

This popular style is a great way to show off a hint of flesh without getting carried away.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Benicia from Maggie Sottero / Ardelle Lynette from Rebecca Ingram

We particularly love sheer fabric when used in place of straps. Almost any strapless can have these added, this can give some extra support if you need it.

Lace

Lace remains one of the wedding world’s most popular and celebrated fabrics when it comes to wedding dresses.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Shiran from Studio Levana / Davenport from Modeca

While many plus-size dresses abandon the favoured fabric for ruched satin or tulle, lace is still fantastic for brides wanting a more traditional day.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Style D2433+ from Essense of Australia / Style 88049 from Justin Alexander

You can use it as a decorative feature as well by increasing its usage around the neckline.

Blush

Coloured gowns have become more and more popular in recent years, and blush is a popular choice in the WJ office.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Grace Loves Lace / Cathrine from WTOO by Watters

This feminine colour is a romantic colour ideal for a winter or spring wedding with a pastel colour scheme.

Wedding-Dresses-For-Curvier-Brides
Garza from David’s Bridal / Style T11966 from Sophia Tolli

It lends itself well well to ballgown silhouettes, combined with modern features like feathers, dramatic ruffles or intricate sparkles.

The Jenny Packham bride, according to this renowned fashion house favoured by celebrities and royals, is international, elegant and informed. Jenny Packham’s 2020 bridal collection is made up of wedding dresses which capture the spirit of some of the world’s most romantic destinations; Paris, Buenos Aires and New York. A favourite of Kate Middleton and many other red carpet celebrities, Jenny Packham’s latest bridal collection is a tale of three cities collectively encapsulating a feminine and distinctly modern beauty.

Ethereal Romance

‘La Vie-Lumière’, the city of light and love, Paris is renowned for its fin-de-siècle grace and its haute couture heritage. Inspired by this sentiment, draped chiffon, finely pleated tulle, delicately embroidered organza and voluminous skirts are softly romantic for an ethereal bride.

Party Glam

‘The city that never sleeps’, New York is an icon of high octane glamour. Set in the historic and beautiful Co.Down village Greyabbey, on the Ards Peninsula, sits Seraphim Couture Bridal.

Their boutique can be found on the the top floor of a 400-year-old building, still housing the original stone and wooden beam features.

Alfecca De Courcey, the founder, was known as ‘The Angel of Ards’ and built the ancient Abbey in 1193, along with the village, just behind us where many wedding pictures have been taken.

A Little Blessing

As a little thank you, at every final fitting, Catherine (the owner) sews a tiny pair of angel wings into every bride’s dress with blue silk.

Seraphim are Heavenly beings, and if you haven’t figured it out yet, the team here have a bit of an angel thing going on! The business supports the charity ‘Tiny Life,’ Northern Ireland’s premature and vulnerable baby charity, dedicated to reducing premature birth, illness, disability and death in babies born here.

Serephim-Couture-Bridal-Online-Feature

Catherine’s twin daughters, now 22, were born at 26 weeks and were given tiny silver angel wings, which they still carry with them every day.

Catherine’s mantra and ethos behind the business is to ensure each and every bride has the sort of experience she would want her own daughters to have when choosing their wedding dress.

‘We have many designers including some exclusive to us, something to suit every budget, a team of amazing seamstresses in-house and an amazingly beautiful studio for you to enjoy.’

‘We believe that every bride should have a heavenly experience when seeking ‘the’ dress, so your experience with us will be second to none; we can bespoke a dress, pair it with gorgeous bridesmaids dresses and accessories, recommend a host of amazing suppliers with whom we have worked often and generally by the time you’ve left us, you’ll be armed with everything to make your wedding day as stress-free as possible and so much fun, you won’t want to leave.’

Brides come to us for something different; we won’t just sell you a dress, we’re there until you walk up the aisle.

Every bride should have a wonderful experience, a wonderful dress and at a wonderful price.
