Best for pigmentation

Best for lifting and tightening

Offered by Dr Cormac Lynch at Ards Dental Practice in Newtownards, Co. Down or Advanced Facial Aesthetics in South Belfast, a non-surgical facelift using PDO threads. As Dr Lynch explains, ‘Resorbable PDO (polydioxanone) sutures, are traumatically introduced to  key areas of the face to subtly and naturally lift loose tissue. In doing so this treatment enhances facial profile, giving very natural results with regards to creating a more youthful and fresh appearance. 

‘The procedure takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete. It is a comfortable procedure which has very low reports of pain or discomfort either during the procedure or post-operatively and there are no visible scars or wounds post-operatively.’

A non-surgical facelift does offer immediate results, with a lift at the brow, a defined jawline and a reduction of lines around the nose and mouth all capable of being achieved. Plus, results improve over the first three months with the body’s response to the sutures stimulating new collagen formation.

Best for glowing skin

Regular rejuvenating facials and one of our favourites has to be dermaplanning. As the experts at Aura Beauty & Wellbeing in Strabane can testify, a dermaplanning facial is the best way to get a smooth finish to your make-up that to its removal of the ‘peach fuzz’, and it is fantastic for targeting pigmentation too.

A small blade is used to scrape dead skin away before an enzyme peel is applied leaving you with a glowing complexion and super fresh skin. Trust us, a dermaplanning facial the week before the wedding really is a must!

Best for lips

A more defined lip line or fuller lips can be achieved by using hyaluronic acid based lip fillers to give you the lip line and shape you desire. The easiest and most natural temporary filler is hyaluronic acid (HA) such as Restylane, which is offered at Ailesbury Clinic.

A small amount of filler is injected directly into the lip or lip line to add volume and fullness. ‘You can choose to have your lips numbed beforehand with a dental nerve block or a topical anaesthetic. There’s practically no downtime and the procedure only takes about 15 to 20 minutes in total. However, you can bruise so do allow for a least three days after the treatment before your wedding day,’ advise their experts.

Best for eyebrows

Whether a time saving measure to save you pencilling in thin brows, or simply to achieve the best shape brow for your face, you won’t regret giving this a go. Do allow four to six weeks for healing and although everyone is different, results can last for approximately 18 months.

47-year-old, Pamela Walker, from Hillsborough, struggled with weight-loss in the lead up to her step-daughters wedding.

With just three months to go until her step-daughter Megans wedding, Pamela was feeling at an all-time low. As everyone else was feeling excited about the beautiful dresses they had chosen, Pamela felt the opposite. Every outfit she tried on felt uncomfortable and she hated the way she looked and felt about herself. 

It was a chance meeting with her friend, Lynn Whan, who had lost over 45lbs on the Cinch Fast 30 programme. Lynn was looking and feeling fantastic, which lead to Pamela signing up to the 30-day challenge.

“It is now second nature, I enjoy the feeling in my fast of allowing my body to rest and digest and of course burn fats cells.”

12 Months To Go

Set up an appointment with your dermatologist: If you’re serious about stepping up your skincare game, speaking to a skin professional is your first step. They can help you understand your skin type, build a plan and recommend products in a safe timeline.

Consider using Retinol: Made from vitamin A, Retinol increases cell turnover, unclogs pores, boosts collagen and diminishes hyperpigmentation. You can add in some exfoliating and stronger products once or twice a week depending on the recommended use.

Work on your wellness: Stress can affect so many things, especially our skin! With the stress of wedding planning, it’s important to take care of yourself mentally and physically – your skin will thank you for it! Balance your planning time with chill time and get plenty of sleep. Meditation and yoga are also great ways to destress in times of overwhelm.

12 Months To Go

Put the tweezers away: We’ve all been guilty of overplucking our brows, but now is the time to cut out any tweezing, waxing and threading! Why? This can lead to losing your natural arch shape which can change your face shape and expression all together!

Consider micro-blading & semi-permanent treatments: If your brows are super sparse, micro-blading could be your best friend! It can help you achieve your dream brows that suit your face shape and can last for 12-18 months.

6 Months To Go

Training your hair to one or two washes per week will allow it to soak up the natural oils it needs and your hair will look and feel healthier after each wash – dry shampoo and slicked back styles between washes can help you still look on point while you train your hair.

Reversing heat damage: From so many heated styling tools such asblow dryers, straighteners and curlers, our hair can suffer from major heat damage, split ends and breakage. Consider non-heated hairstyles to reduce heat damage and get your hair back to a healthier state.

Look into nail technicians & book appointments: start getting excited about your w-day nails, look into different styles and research local nail techs. Test out some different styles with a few appointments to know what you like!

Invest in regular manicures: Treat yourself to some mani-pedis to ensure your nails are in tip-top shape! This can help with cuticle care, nourishing your nails and is a great form of self-care! There are also protective options like BIAB instead of acrylics or gel to keep your nails cute and in good condition.

“You have to have patience, be consistent and give the product time to do their job. Brides come to me all the time and their face has completely broke out because they’ve jumped from one product to another, but consistency is key to seeing results.”

Using sun beds and getting a real tan will start to reverse all the improvements you have made. There are plenty of amazing spray tans/self-tan options available. Always wear sunscreen even on cloudy days. Most good makeup brands have an SPF30-50 option so go treat and protect yourself!

“No 2: Avoid getting your first injectables very close to your wedding date! Injectables are medical treatments involving needles and all have a potential list of side effects. I have seen more than a few brides suddenly decide to get Antiwrinkle or Dermal Filler treatment two weeks before their wedding and arguably had their big day ruined by going to the wrong person at the wrong time and getting the wrong advice.

“Choose your injector wisely. It is a very important journey for you, (not a sprint race) too much too quickly can look unnatural, so plan ahead and stay in control!

“No.3: Avoid ignoring that one thing that really bothers you before your big day! The amazing advancements in Aesthetic medicine over the last 10 years makes it possible to greatly improve that one thing that has always troubled you. Often these things can be treated with very little downtime and no need for invasive surgery.”

How would you advise our brides and grooms-to-be to get their skin wedding ready?

“I would advise booking an appointment to develop a personal treatment regimen long before your big day. Everyone is going to have different concerns, needs, requirements and expectations. We have an array of treatments available for all skin conditions.

“Some brides and grooms may benefit from a series of Peels, LED light treatments, Dermapen micro-needling, Platelet Rich Plasma (made famous by Kim Kardashian), personal prescription medication, not to mention the vast range of injectables offered.

“I often use the analogy of seeing your skin like an oil painting. 

“You may wish to restore the underlying frame:

• Dermal fillers = help by restoring some of the volume loss behind the canvas and help build up the frame to its former glory. Giving support for the painting.

You may wish to help improve any lines or wrinkles in the canvas:

• Anti-wrinkle injections = help by removing lines and wrinkles in the canvas.

Finally, we need to ensure the quality of the canvas itself looks amazing:

“An ever-growing number of brides and grooms are looking for Non-surgical Rhinoplasties or nose jobs. It’s now possible to correct a hump, a dropped tip, even thin the nose and lift the tip using a combination of fillers, PDO threads and anti-wrinkle injections. It involves very little downtime and no need for invasive surgery.

“Jawline sculpting is also very popular and have different approaches depending on the gender. The males are looking for a stronger more masculine look while females are looking for a slimline more defined jaw and to tighten up under the chin.

“The latest ‘tweakment’ of 2021 called Profhilo has been extremely popular. It is injectable moisturiser which helps remodel the skin from causing it to massively boost collagen and elastin production resulting in plumping tightening and firming of the skin. All those lovely things our skin desires most.

“Let’s not forget about the mother of the brides and grooms. Many of my clients are mothers of the bridal party, and it is so important that they feel confident on the big day. A big proportion of these treatments will involve gradually replacing their volume loss.

We then target any other areas of concern from natural lip restoration to smokers lines/kissing lines around the mouth and neck lines. We can get great results for neck lines and loose skin by using a combination of Anti-wrinkle, Profhilo and PDO threads.” 

How long before a wedding would you advise someone to look at getting a treatment?

“The sooner the better! The earlier you start your treatments the more time we have to make you look your best. The perfect example is anti-wrinkle treatment. It may not totally remove the deep static lines on your forehead or brow area after the first treatment, but the more times you get it done, the better the result each time.

“It’s also important to remember if your wedding is in two years, you will have aged another two years when the big day arrives – so start now to help slow and even reverse these signs of ageing.”

If you’ve been keeping up with us as we documented Caitlyn Lendrum‘s wedding planning journey, you’ll know now our bride-to-be is just a few days away from saying ‘I Do!’

We’ve covered everything from planning during a pandemic to finding the perfect venue and saying ‘YES’ to the dress, so today we look back at how Caitlyn really feels ahead of the alter before she officially becomes Mrs Hegarty on 22nd October…

So Caitlyn, we’re assuming a lot of your wedding planning is underway – how did you and Tony find your overall planning experience?

“I have to say, after only having to change our date once we got very lucky! All of our vendors were able to change to our second day so we didn’t have much stress with changing the date.

“When we booked the wedding, it was 14 months before our original date, which I now realise was quite a tight turnaround. I know people who have had less time, but it came around so quickly!”

Looking back, what do you wish you knew before planning a wedding?

“I have to say the MAJORITY of vendors and businesses I’ve dealt with have been so lovely, however on a more serious note, I have dealt with some vendors that I haven’t had a great feeling from. Getting married and planning a wedding is a very exciting experience and it’s lovely that some suppliers would go above and beyond for you.

“But if you speak with a vendor or visit a shop and you don’t get a good feeling, then find someone who would bend over backwards for you! You’re spending your hard-earned money and sometimes thousands of pounds, so I really think you should spend it wisely with people who give you a good feeling.”

Is there anything you would do differently that you didn’t think of before?

“One thing I would definitely recommend is ticking away paying bills throughout the lead up! We didn’t pay a whole lot except small deposits up until the past couple of weeks. We were advised against paying people in full months earlier in case businesses closed due to Covid.

“However, if it wasn’t Covid times I would recommend slowly paying off as you go. That means when you come close to the day, it isn’t as daunting getting massive bills which can make it easy to panic and feel overwhelmed. If we paid off over the past 20 months, the lead up would have been a breeze! We are one week out and everyday we are paying invoices – it’s just crazy!”

What are you and Tony most looking forward to about your day?

“​Personally, I am most excited to see it all come together! I didn’t have a wedding planner and I it planned 90% myself, Tony managed the honeymoon and music so the anticipation of seeing all the vendors coming together will be the nerve-wracking part! I hope I have done an amazing job of creating a master piece!”

Have you picked up any handy tips to share with our brides-to-be?

​”One thing I have been practicing is to ensure I don’t try anything new – it can be easy to over indulge and try new face masks every night and put 17 creams on your face to make sure it’s immaculate, but the best thing you can do is strip it all back, find one strict routine that works for you and keep to it! I also plan on doing all my treatments at the start of the week, starting with waxing and tinting my brows on Monday so my tint can soften throughout the week. 

“I also have a couple of must-haves to pack! From doing wedding makeup on so many fabulous brides, I have picked up a couple of ‘must-haves’ and ‘do’s and dont’s!’ In advance send a message to your makeup artist and ask which lip she plans on using on your makeup and your bridesmaids – this means throughout the day you can top-up with the same lip and always look picture perfect. This is also a perfect gift to pop into your bridesmaid gift bag.

“I also find in the morning when the room is full with makeup artists, hair dressers and the full bridal party, it can get very warm! I have packed a cheap desk top fan to pop on while the girls are getting their makeup done! We do not want any SULA! (Sweaty Upper Lip Alert!) Two SOS items I recommend packing is a hand-held steamer! You can grab one on amazon for £20 and this could be a life saver. lastly PLEASE bring a small sewing kit… that reminds me, I’m jumping onto amazon now! You never know who’s zip may burst in the morning!” 

How did you keep track of your wedding planning journey?

“​Honestly right now, EVERYTHING is in my notes on my phone!​ I have a paper planner which was a fabulous gift to us but as I’m constantly on the go, in work or in the car and something pops into my head, I just pop it in my notes there and then – It has been a godsend!”

Finally, what’s left to do on the agenda this week?

​”To CHILL! Finally. We packed our cases last weekend for the wedding and honeymoon. We have been lying low to avoid and colds or flus so we won’t be up to much at all. I have to pack some bits for the night before the wedding so I will do that over the week, then we’re just going to relax and get excited for the big day!

Ok Caitlyn… so we’re officially into your wedding month and we’re curious about your bridal regime – how are you getting prepared for the big day?

“Over the past couple of weeks I have made a conscious effort to slow down and look after myself – something as an entrepreneur, I definitely don’t do enough! I recently employed someone full-time to run my second business By Caitlyn Collection alongside me. From taking this leap I have managed to secure a much better routine for myself.

“I have been visiting Martina Collins Dental and Skin in Hillsborough for some light peels and facials. I brought my mum along and I visited Ashleigh for a consultation and I have since had an Obagi Blue Peel Radiance – this is a salicylic acid based peel which works to decongest, brighten and smooth the skins texture with little to no recovery time. “I have also been getting lip fillers for the past seven years, so I had a little top up this month but that’s all. The main surgery I had done for the wedding was my laser eye surgery. This was really the only surgery that I was ever desperate for! I didn’t mind my glasses, however I hated when I got glam and then had to put my glasses on. I also was never comfortable for a long period of time wearing contact lenses so I knew I would struggle for the whole day at the wedding. I went to Optilaise Clinic in Belfast and I can definitely say it changed my life!”

We just know your bridal glam will be amazing! Who will be doing your makeup and what kind of vibe are you going for?

“Ahh, this has to be the most asked question ever – if I could have a pound for every person who asked me this I could pay off the wedding AND HONEYMOON!  As a makeup artist and also a fiancée, I knew I would never do my own makeup. I have spent ten years getting ladies glam for their own events or weddings and I want that same experience for myself.

“I want to sit in the makeup chair and get pampered and I always knew who I would ask! I previously worked in a makeup studio and met so many talented girls – one being my best friend and maid-of-honour, Chloe Loughins. Chloe is fabulously talented, I have put all my trust in Chloe to create something beautiful.”

We can’t forget about the hair! Who is will be doing your hair and what kind of style do you have in mind?

“Hair for me was probably the only thing I really stressed over! I was so undecided on whether I wanted to keep my hair in a short bob and down, grow it out, get extensions or wear it up or even half-up/half-down?! It’s exhausting trying to figure out what looks best.

“The team in Nicholas Graham Salon have been doing my hair a couple of years now so I knew that’s who I would choose. I’m booked in next week for my final colour and cut appointment and I can’t wait! It’s always the best feeling getting a fresh cut. I have the fabulous Deborah K Designs creating something for my hair and I absolutely can’t wait to see what it’s like!”

Let’s talk bridal nails – who is doing your nails and what kind of aesthetic are you going for?

“Not only is my best friend my makeup artist, but my mum is actually my nail technician! I think a classic French nail is very hard to beat so I definitely think I will go for something elegant and timeless.”

“As a natural brunette, I am also quite swarthy-skinned which means I tan easily and keep a colour well. Don’t worry about the walk

Being the centre of attention and having all eyes on you isn’t for everyone, and for some this mental block can cause a lot of stress. 

For those who suffer social anxiety disorder and feel this is likely to be triggered whilst walking down the aisle, there are techniques you can practise to help you cope with this before the big day.

Take a break from organising the wedding to make time for the usual routines and practises you do to help deal with your everyday anxieties.

Rehearse rehearse rehearse

Rehearsing the big day beforehand will give you a taste of what the real event will be like, helping you to feel more comfortable with the venue and not be as overwhelmed. Don’t forget to eat!

Your diet can be a trigger for anxiety too, so try to cut out any high-sugar or caffeine-fuelled drinks on the day of your wedding. But a light meal can settle nerves or at least calm those butterflies, and you’re burning nervous energy so you will need to replace that energy to see you through the day. Try to eat little and often, and graze while you’re getting ready on the day.

Probably one of the biggest concerns for many people is the financial aspect of a wedding. It’s no secret that weddings are expensive, especially if you’ve had to rearrange due to previous Covid restrictions, and setting a budget is key for ensuring an unnecessary amount of money isn’t spent on the ceremony.

If the price tag of your wedding is causing you to lose sleep at night, it’s important to remember that your wedding is for you and your partner—not a fancy display for the guests. So, if you don’t want something, you don’t have to buy it.

Find some perspective

Whether your wedding day has been delayed due to previous pandemic restrictions, or the organisation is causing you anxiety, it is vital you put things into perspective. Right now you might be experiencing a lot of stress and anxiety, but think about 10 years from now. Your wedding is one day, but the commitment you and your partner make to each other is forever.

Distract yourself

Although your wedding day might be the only thing you can think about, find distractions from this. Whether this be through sport, cooking, art, or even watching a TV show that makes you laugh, these are all healthy outlets to relieve stress and anxiety. 

Manage the adrenalin

When You’re nervous and feel butterflies in your stomach, that’s adrenalin – it’s the hormone that helps us to lift huge weights, run like the wind and survive things we thought we couldn’t. It’s useful for survival, but only when you’re in a survival situation. So control adrenalin by forcibly relaxing your muscles, and breathing deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth. Visualise yourself somewhere calm and happy like a beach or spa and the adrenalin will drain out of your system.

Sleep

Sleep is the one thing that will help your body to cope with stress. If you’re struggling to sleep, take a warm bath or read a book and relax and eventually your blood pressure will drop enough to help you to relax into sleep, even for a little while. It all helps.

Get active

Doing exercise can help to burn off adrenalin and calm your nerves, so take a gentle class, do a little yoga, go for a run or bike ride or take the dog for a long walk. Do whatever it takes to tire yourself out, but don’t exhaust yourself. If you have time, it’s worth even going for a short walk or run on the day itself to calm nerves.

Ask for help

Don’t be afraid to delegate – your life is full of people who want to help out on the big day. Once you can be sure that everything is in hand, it should help to reduce your stress levels. Don’t forget to take a few minutes to yourself away from others to calm down – chill out quietly, listen to music alone, read a book or magazine to take your mind off things and relax.

Think about what it means

Rather than be consumed by the aesthetics of the day, think about what it actually symbolises. Since in the end, that’s all that matters. Although weddings do entail some level of stress regardless of a pandemic, it is important that you find ways to deal with this rather than pushing your feelings aside.

The Round Face

The good news about having a round-shaped face is that the cherubim-like cheeks often give off a youthful and healthy appearance! Just look at Selena Gomez who is known for her beautiful rounded face and always looks flawless and on point.

Dos:

For the round-faced brides, we recommend going for either a lengthy ponytail or textured updo to slim down the face and breakup the shape. Any look with height will help to elongate the face and give a sophisticated look to your youthful features – add extra hair around the sides to break up the roundness.

Don’ts:

Stay clear of a super straight or sleek hairstyle as this can make the face appear even more rounded. Also adding a fringe to your look can create the illusion of a smaller face and again rounder, so smaller strands of hair around the sides may work better.

The Oval Face

To avoid making your face appear even longer, avoid any styles that will give you lots of height such as a long sleek straight hairstyle – the key with an oval-shaped face is to add width around the face to make it appear more rounded.

Also avoid any tight slicked back styles such as sleek buns as this will only accentuate the length of your face. It’s best to stay clear of middle partings as this again will draw attention to the longest part of the face.

The Diamond Face Shape

Brides with a diamond face shape have a mix of both the heart and square shape with wideness across the cheekbones while the forehead and jawline appear the same length. The thing about this face shape is that it is quite angular, so like the square shape you need to look at styles that create softness and balance out your features.

Apricity was launched by Newtownabbey beauty salon owner Erin Woods after last year’s lockdown forced the beauty industry to close its doors.

When her salon, Elite Beauty was forced to close, Erin wasted no time in thinking up new ideas and came up with the notion of Apricity Tan.

“Like many others I spent the first two weeks of lockdown crying and panicking, but I pride myself on being a positive person so once the initial shock wore off I knew I had to find a way to create another income stream,” Erin says.

 “I’d never been out of work before and wanted to put my time to good use. Three years ago I’d had the idea of launching my own range of self-tan but never followed through with it. 

“But with nothing else to do and no money coming in I decided it was now or never and began contacting manufacturers all over the world. After lots of research, hundreds of samples and some awful tan disasters in between, Apricity was born.”

Apricity is manufactured in the US, vegan friendly and sustainably sourced, and Erin wanted to create a product that would empower women and make them feel good about themselves, which is why the marketing campaign for Apricity has centred on real women with real bodies.

 “Being confident in your own skin is what our brand is all about,” Erin says. “I’m a mum of one who has struggled with her weight over the years so I didn’t want to be responsible for contributing to this notion that beauty only comes in one shape or size.”

 The range currently consists of three shades of self-tanning mousse, a facial mist, a tanning brush and a mitt, but Erin has ambitious plans for the brand,with plans for new products already in the pipeline. 

“I’m a firm believer that you can achieve anything in life if you put your mind to it and launching Apricity has been a dream come true. I feel like this is only the start of the journey though and I’m excited for what the future holds next,” she says.

Everywhere you look, there are rules about weddings – who you have to invite, what you have to buy, gifts you have to give. If I had a penny for everyone who said some version of ‘You absolutely mustn’t forget to do this’, I could probably have paid for the wedding all in one go!

But when the honeymoon’s over and you’re looking back on your big day from a position of newlywed bliss (we hope!), it can all look very different, and things that loomed large in the run-up to the wedding may now seem quite trivial!

So we asked our friends and families what they wish they’d known before they organised their weddings – who knows, this might help you to relax and go with the flow a little when you realise how unimportant some things end up being!

1. Shoes are not that important 

I had the loveliest shoes – in a delicate Mary Jane style with double straps – but before anyone even saw them, the photographer had taken us out onto the damp grass for pictures and the heels sank deep into the mud, leaving a mucky watermark that was never to be removed. Another bride I spoke to says no-one ever sees your shoes and they can end up lasting about five minutes: “My gorgeous shoes got stuck in decking after 10 steps and it was bare feet from that moment onwards!”

2. You’ll look amazing

We all spent months fretting about our weight and our skincare in the run-up to the big day and do you know what? We all looked brilliant. I planned out a punishing gym schedule in a bid to fit into a size 12 dress, but luckily the very experienced dress shop owner advised me to go for a 14, and she was absolutely right – I soon pulled my hamstring in a spin class and the gym schedule had to go out the window. But thanks to my gorgeous dress and perfect make-up and hair, I felt wonderful. So don’t sweat it if you’re struggling with less than perfect skin or weight before the wedding – you will feel magnificent when you walk down the aisle.

3. You need to double check the DJ has the right song for your first dance

One bride revealed her DJ was calling her during the wedding ceremony itself to ask what the back-ups were because he didn’t have their first song : “Download from iTunes, buddy!” And we erroneously thought our wedding band would be playing our first song and had sent a couple of versions of the Led Zeppelin song ‘Thank You’ to be helpful – it ended up with the DJ playing the rather ropey Tori Amos cover instead of a gorgeously jazzy Lizz Wright version. There were raised eyebrows in every direction, but we ended up laughing about it!

4. Deal with the big issues first

Prioritise your venue, caterer, dress, photographer and flowers – these are major big-ticket items that may have to be booked a long way in advance. Get these crossed off your list early on and then look again at your budget to see what you can afford for the smaller things.

5. Half the favours will end up lying around the tables at the end of the night

They may seem like little inexpensive items, but multiply them up by 120 or 250 and the cost soon stacks up. So make sure your favours are something your guests will really love and appreciate. Ours were heart-shaped chocolates in filmy net with tiny paper flowers – which you’d expect to be popular – and they were still left. So think hard about favours before you spend all that money.

6. You’ve got to eat first thing in the morning 

Do NOT skip breakfast, even if you have to get up earlier. Bring snacks with you that are non-messy and can be tucked away in a small bag – even better, get your bridesmaids to bring something. What people forget about weddings is how long the hours are during which everybody sits around not eating before you actually get to sit down to dinner. And your guests will probably have time to order a sneaky plate of sandwiches at some point, but you won’t. The last thing you need is a blood sugar crash or a migraine.

7. You’ll spend a lot of time with your wedding suppliers

You’re going to be talking a lot to your hairdresser, your make-up artist, your photographer and your videographer, so make sure you trust and like them. You want to be spending time with people you get on with on your big day, not someone who sets your teeth on edge. Former bride Julie says: “Choose only positive people and make sure you’ll want to be around them on the day – mine slightly ruined the vibe at times.”

8. You’ll need a Plan B for every aspect of the day

Make sure you have put together some kind of contingency plan and make sure your bridal party is well aware of it. One groom had to come up with a quick plan change when the photography venue fell through: “We wanted photos in Botanic Gardens in Belfast and it was a five-minute walk from the venue. However, it wasn’t available and we had to hurriedly book transport to an alternative location, Lady Dixon Park.”

9. Honestly? No-one will remember the decor

Guests may admire your flowers or chairs or table settings, but they won’t remember them. So make sure you do what makes you happy if you’re spending so much money. Pick what you love, rather than what you think fits in with a particular style, or you think others will like.

10. You’ll never get your time back

Wedding planning is extremely time-consuming, but this is your life and your time is valuable. You wouldn’t spend money frivolously so don’t spend your time frivolously either – you’re not trying to win any awards. If you find yourself getting too bogged down in tiny details, then rein it in. There are loads of free online resources online that can help you with the wedding planning, including our free wedding planner, so don’t reinvent the wheel!

11. Expect the unexpected

It doesn’t matter how perfectly you organise everything – there will always be something that doesn’t go perfectly to plan, be it the wrong colour of ribbons on the cake, the song for the first dance or the weather on the day. So don’t sweat the small stuff! My bridal shop forgot to put on the fastener on my dress that should have kept my train up off the ground and I had to improvise with nappy safety pins. Then we arrived to find the venue had put up a welcome board that named another couple instead of us! But those are the things that you leave to your wedding party members to deal with – you’ll be up to your eyes being photographed and talking to guests. You might not even notice some of the things that go wrong. It’s the little hitches that you’ll laugh and reminisce about in years to come, especially when the people you love are no longer around. Wouldn’t life be boring if everything was perfect?

The honeymoon is probably the most expensive holiday you’ll ever take in your life – and that means expectations can be overwhelming.

And if things go belly-up, a honeymoon disaster can feel like the absolute last straw. You’ve spent months and months organising your wedding right down to the last T, and you should feel entitled to relax and enjoy your newlywed status in a heavenly holiday destination.

So when everything starts to unravel, it can put terrible strain on a marriage that is in its infancy.

We’ve heard of honeymooning couples who found themselves throwing up for days on end after coming down with a local tummy bug, or were confined to quarters after their hotel was hit by storms and monsoons. 

There were honeymoon mix-ups which left couples unable to leave their own country, and the couple whose flight was grounded because birds had flown into the propeller before take-off, and they ended up marooned in a dirty two-star motel while waiting for the aircraft to be fixed.

Or the bride whose new in-laws decided to surprise them by joining them on their road trip honeymoon and were then car-sick the whole time (colossal yikes!).

Even celebrities aren’t immune to the honeymoon disaster despite all their wealth and influence.

Katherine Heigl was unable to jet off to Mexico as planned after marrying Josh Kelley in Utah in 2007, because she had forgotten to bring her passport – instead the pair had to stop off in California before later finding their way to their honeymoon destination.

Meanwhile, Renee Zellweger‘s husband, country singer Kenny Chesney, admitted their honeymoon in Little Rock, Arkansas, was a disaster as he was there to do a show, and then had to go back on the road and do more shows in Oklahoma, Dallas and San Antonio.

And the most disastrous celeb honeymoon award has to go to Mila Kunis who likened her trip in an RV with her 10-month-old baby, husband Ashton Kutcher and his parents to a National Lampoon movie. It involved a ‘tin can on wheels’, broken air con, a long detour along a boulder-strewn fire road and a night stop close to two prisons instead of the Napa Valley.

So even though you are probably completely immersed in wedding planning, do spare a little time and money to disaster-proof your honeymoon, just in case it all goes pear-shaped!

Tips for avoiding a Honeymoon Disaster

1. Don’t forget to budget

Couples can get consumed with details like flowers and centrepieces and forget to set aside enough money for the honeymoon. You really don’t want to be standing in the middle of a sweltering Bangkok city street when you discover you’ve maxed out your credit card.

2. Communicate about honeymoon expectations

It’s your first trip away as a married couple, so make sure you’re on the same page. Do you both want to seek out adventurous experiences or just chill on the beach with pina coladas on tap? Talk about it beforehand or you could find tensions rising.

3. Do your research

Find out about your destination and think about what to do if your passports and money are stolen – which can be an all too common occurrence. Make sure you have the details for your local embassy, know how to file a police report, and bring emergency money and photocopies of your passport in a hidden part of your belongings.

4. Make sure your travel insurance is in order

The last thing you want is to be stranded in a foreign country without any back-up when sickness hits or serious injury happens. The newspapers are full of stories about couples who met with disaster on their holidays and found themselves in a horrible situation.

5. Sort out your passport

Don’t forget that you may have a new name now – and your booking name needs to match the name on your passport. As well as that, some countries won’t accept travellers whose passports were only renewed within six months, so make sure you find out in good time what you need to do. You might even need to bring your marriage certificate as a precaution.

6. Get your jabs

Make sure you get the correct vaccinations before you go away – we know there are lots of new rules governing travel now that Covid is here, but you may also need to protect yourself against malaria,  yellow fever, typhoid and others, depending on where you’re going.

7. Take care once you’re there

Peel any fruit before eating it and always ask for a sealed bottle of water. Be careful of ice cubes – they could be made with tap water. And make sure you have the basic first aid items you need in case things go wrong – tummy remedies, hangover medication, insect repellant and disinfectant. Oh and a little something in case you get cystitis – sex, heat and dehydration can be a killer of a combination!

8. Pack in good time

Pack some of your belongings in each other’s cases, just in case some of your luggage goes missing on route, and bring some essentials such as underwear, toiletries and valuables in your hand luggage. Make sure you have your passport, insurance details, inoculation details, some first aid items and a plug to fit the local sockets if you are bringing anything electrical.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started – but chat to your beauty therapist or clinic to find out what will suit you best.

• Lash extensions or tinting 

You may be longing for luscious lashes, but are wary of faffing about with false eyelashes on the day itself. You could try lash extensions, individually applied fibres which start to come off from around two or weeks after application. If you love the length of your lashes, however, try using a lash tint to add some extra definition. Book your appointment a week before the wedding to give you time to get used to your long lashes. • The Vampire Facelift (PRP)

This one is a new favourite – Platelet Rich Plasma rejuvenates the skin, especially in the under-eye area as well as facial and body areas. It works by using your own platelet cells from a portion of your blood – these are rich in growth factors and stem cells to regenerate and remodel the skin naturally, increasing elasticity and collagen production.  The treatment re-plumps and rejuvenates the skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles to create a youthful, radiant glow. • Microblading

This technique gives the impression of fuller and thicker brows without needing make-up on your wedding day. Hair-like incision strokes are made to the skin’s surface using a nanoblade, penetrating only as far as the upper skin. You can choose to simply fill in sparse areas with a colour-matching technique or have your lighter eyebrows made darker for a more striking appearance. The results can last for 12 to 24 months. Have it at least two weeks before the wedding.

• Injectable moisturisers

Injectable moisturisers like Profhilo promise the “airbrushed look” and are used very effectively in the treatment of crepey, saggy, rough and dehydrated skin.   Profhilo is a skin treatment that hydrates and lifts the skin, and is hugely popular for weddings.  It is commonly used after fillers for an “all-over glow” – you can opt for an all-over facial treatment or target a particular area of concern.   Available from Dr McNally at Rejuvenate Anti-Ageing Clinic in Belfast.

• Waxing

Brides usually choose wax before their wedding because waxing removes hair for a longer period of time and leaves the skin looking smooth and hairless for longer. Waxing removes the hair at the root and typically lasts anywhere from three to six weeks, carrying you through to the end of the honeymoon. It’s usually recommended to wax a week before your big day – never, ever do it on the day of the wedding! If you have sensitive skin, you could see some redness or blotchiness, but it will calm down in a day or so. Lavender Health Spa in Ballygawley offers a very comprehensive range of waxing options.

• Microneedling

This is a skin renewal technique that gives similar results to ablative techniques such as deep chemical peels, lasers and fraxel, but is less invasive and doesn’t require the removal of the skin’s surface. Healing time is shorter and there is less chance of post treatment sensitivity to UV light. It’s suitable for the fragile skin around the eyes, mouth, on the neck and on ethnic skins and is based on the skin’s natural ability to self repair when physically damaged by cuts and abrasions. The recommended course of treatment is three to six sessions, two to four weeks apart for optimum results – although you will begin to see improvement after the first treatment. • Skin Peels

The Laser and Skin Clinic offers a range of skin peels for a number of concerns, such as acne, fine lines/wrinkles, sunspots and more. Whether you want to completely renew your skin or simply give it a moisture boost, the clinic recommends a course of skin peels for optimal visible results. Do allow enough time between your first appointment and your wedding day when booking a course of skin peel treatments to make sure you’re absolutely glowing for the day.

• Dermaroller

If your skin is looking lacklustre and starting to sag, it’s worth investigating dermarolling. Your therapist rolls a tiny cylindrical drum with micro-needles across the surface of the face, causing microscopic punctures which encourage the skin to repair and stimulate cell regeneration. It results in increased collagen production and plumper, more youthful skin. Have this treatment 1-2 weeks ahead of the wedding as skin repair can take up to a week. 

• Fake tan

Top up your glow with a hint of healthy colour. You should exfoliate and moisturise your skin a day or two before your tanning appointment to make sure the tan goes on smoothly. Do it two days before the wedding, so you don’t end up with unsightly brown streaks on your wedding dress.

• Sunekos

This is a new injectable treatment featuring a formula of amino acids and hyaluronic acid. It regenerates the Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM) by stimulating the skin’s fibroblasts to produce a complete mix of collagen and elastin. The Laser and Skin Clinic recommends Sunekos as an excellent option for brides who wish to maintain a more natural look or those who do not want or need anti-wrinkle injections or fillers.

• Nails

Get your manicure and pedicure done a couple of days before the wedding – they’ll still be fine on the day itself and you’ll have them done in time for the wedding rehearsal. There are so many ways you can do them as well – from nail art with hints of cobalt (for your something blue), to misty grey or mink, or accessorised with touches of pearl.

• Photorejuvenation

This laser treatment uses IPL to treat a number of skin concerns such as red veins, sun spots, uneven pigment, fine lines and wrinkles and is popular because it gives a clear, healthy, plump and rejuvenated appearance to the skin. A cold gel is applied to the area to be treated, and a sensation often described as being similar to the snapping of a rubber band is felt on the surface of the skin, along with a little heat. Treatment time is approximately 20 to 30 minutes, after which a cold pack may be applied to your skin. With so many brands and scents out there, it can be difficult to narrow down the search for ‘the one.’ You want something that makes you feel confident, classy and captivating as you walk down the aisle, so we’re offering our best advice on how to make the perfect decision.

So why does it matter so much?

You might be thinking your signature scent should be your go-to, but there’s something magical about choosing a brand-new fragrance specifically for your wedding day. It’s not just about picking a pretty perfume, there’s actually some science behind it!

Our sense of smell is linked to the limbic area of the brain which basically means it creates a ‘smell memory’ that can last a lifetime, so when you take that perfume out again it’ll be like travelling back in time to the day you said ‘I do’.

How do you go about choosing?

Now that we know why it matters, we may want to choose one that stands out from the rest but still feels like you! Just because it’s your new bridal perfume, doesn’t mean you need to look for something completely different to what you normally go for.

You can start by taking some inspiration from your favourite scents, for example, if you love a floral moment you might want to stick to something in the same fragrance family, but maybe treat yourself to a designer perfume from a luxury brand (go on, you deserve it). Another tip is checking out the ingredients to see if there is another out there that compares with similar tones.

With lockdown after lockdown, it can seem almost impossible for us to imagine what our ‘new normal’ might look like. We caught up with award-winning and crazy talented MUA Jennifer Ireland, to chat about how corona has affected the beauty industry…and to divulge some MUA secrets.

So Jennifer, how has Covid-19 impacted your business?

Lock down and restrictions have completely decimated the wedding industry this year.  It’s so heartbreaking for both the couples and businesses alike.  I was on maternity leave earlier in the year so wasn’t meant to be working anyway, but the vast majority of my bookings for my return and the remainder of this year have postponed until next year.  It’s definitely scary to see my diary so quiet, especially as I haven’t been earning since December, but it’s totally understandable why so many want to hold off.  I am so thankful though that a few couples have gone ahead with a more minimal day, so there is enough work just to keep things ticking over.  Plus, it’s just a joy to see people get married!

At present I haven’t been affected with regards to how far I can travel, or if I can go into people’s homes.  The latest rules for NI, even in areas where restrictions have been tightened, allow the services of any trade or profession to be carried out in a private dwelling, and allow businesses to still operate from home.  Meaning clients can still come to my home studio, and I can still travel to their homes on the morning of a wedding.

How have you adapted your kit to Covid-19?

Due to the nature of my business, I’ve always practised high standards of hygiene anyway, but of course adaptations have been made for the “new normal” we all find ourselves in.  Firstly, I expanded my brush set so on the morning of a wedding, each person has their own set, which are labelled in pots.  Each person also gets a box fresh new sponge and powder puff so there is no cross contamination.  Minimal products are lifted out so as not to expose everything during each application, and any products that are used are cleaned thoroughly between clients.  Surfaces of course are regularly wiped down both at the studio and when I’m on location.  Hands are regularly washed and sanitised, and I obviously can’t social distance so wear PPE during applications.

What can brides do to help keep things safe?

Before and after applications we can socially distance, but during I wear a mask and goggles.  Try to keep windows and doors open as much as possible to keep the air flowing, and where possible, keep numbers restricted.  At my studio, I ask the bride to come alone.  Or if they have booked a trial for anyone else in their party, I ask them to wear masks whilst waiting.  On a wedding morning, there will be more people around due to the nature of the event so if brides can ensure there is as much space as possible for social distancing, and plenty of hand washing and sanitising.  Also, keeping preparation areas separate from where breakfast is being made and ate, with surfaces being wiped down prior to hair/make-up arriving would be great too.

Any advice for brides planning a wedding during a pandemic?

We don’t know what’s going to happen next week never mind in a few months time, and definitely not in the next year.  So I think couples should still go ahead with plans and just hope for the best.  That’s all we can do, right?  Now, post-lock down, most businesses have a “Covid clause” already included in their booking terms, and if not, all you have to do is ask what their policy is regarding the pandemic.  Keep in mind and accept that things might have to change last minute through nobody’s fault, and really think about what actually matters to you.  It might be a reason to scale back, which I think for some will work well!  And at least now, compared to all those poor couples who planned their wedding without having ANY notion of what 2020 was going to bring, couples can tackle wedding planning for the next year or so on the offence.

Delete any hairstyles that aren’t really doing it for you until you’re left with a smaller selection of 10 to 20. From there, eliminate the ones that don’t really fit with the theme of your wedding, or might not be a good match with your dress. Hopefully you’ll have a handful left to show to your hairdresser.

Consult your hairdresser

First things first, clarify what you want. Whimsical hair is usually undone and elegantly disheveled, with soft curls that have been brushed out for a more natural look. You’ll want to bring all your pics along. Chat through what elements you like on each pic and how you envisage the look on your own hair. It’s crucial at this point to show your hairdresser a pic of your wedding dress so they can create a look that ties in with it.

Have a trial run

No matter what kind of bridal hairstyle you are choosing you should always have at least one trial run. Many brides have their hair trial on their hen do, but you can of course have it on a random Tuesday if you feel like it. The whole purpose is to see how the style looks on you and to indentify any problems or tweaks you’d like made. Still not 100 per cent certain about your hair? Have another trial. You aren’t limited to just one. It’s a good idea to see how it ties in with your wedding makeup too.

On paper, it should also suit most skin types – it has a lightweight consistency perfect for oily skin however for those with drier skin types watch out as we don’t our foundation to cling to those dry patches. Fear not a great moisturiser and primer can go a long way in creating a neutral base before make up application. 

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 30ml, RRP £24.50

Available in a host of colours to suit all skin tones, MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation offers a natural matte finish. It is thicker than foundations you may be accustomed to, the oil-controlling formula provides medium to full coverage for a flawless base that stays put. (Ideal for your wedding right?) 

When we say full coverage – we mean it! If you’re looking for a light natural look maybe MAC isn’t for you. However if you love your make up and want to feel 100% flawless you’ve found your match. It’s perfect for those who have make up experience, as it is a heavier consistency it’s important to work fast and use a flat foundation brush or buffing brush to blend. 

Vichy Dermablend Corrective Fluid Foundation 16hr – £20

This is the one you’ve probable seen on youtube and all over social media if you haven’t lived under a rock. It’s dominated the internet with viral videos of the foundation covering extreme cases of acne. If you have acne prone skin or scarring, then you’re probably on the look-out for a wedding day foundation which will guarantee an airbrushed look. This will do just that!

Choosing from a range of coverage levels and finishes it really is a game of trial and error until you find one that makes you look and feel like a flawless bride. In this case the finish is matte, basically the opposite of a day finish. If you’ve oily skin this is most likely your safest bet to avoid shiny patches and your make up sweating off a few hours in. 

The product is enriched with Shea butter helping moisturise the skin while you wear the product. (Don’t panic if you have oily skin, this will just moisturise the skin it won’t lave you looking shiny. Also we are thrilled that this product has SPF 15 – good old Bobbi Brown looking out for our skin and reducing the effects of sun-skin damage.

Last but by no means least! We are big fans of Max Factors ‘Miracle Touch’ foundation. At only £13.99, this product is a steal and perfect for a budget conscious bride.

This thicker feeling foundation aims to combine the best elements of a solid and liquid foundation. Despite its solid constancy and appearance it comes a liquid as soon as it touches the skin. Cool right? 

This foundation is medium – high coverage so we would recommend using your trusty beauty blender to apply. It really is value for money and if you’re looking to save ahead of your wedding this is one to try. The great thing about Max Factor is the natural finish this product leaves. It’s all about shade selection and remember to match it to your skin tone ‘post tan’ that’s right, you don’t want your face to be a different colour to your body so shade shop smart!

Schedule a Professional Clean: Superficial staining from food and drinks such as tea, coffee or red win can often be removed with a professional clean. The best treatment you can get is by a professional, so a book an appointment. The dentist will go through all your options and examine the health of your teeth.

Choose Teeth-Friendly Snacks: Eating crunchy fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples and celery will stimulate the production of salvia, which in turn helps to wash away any plaque. Raw fruits and vegetables are a natural abrasive that can help to keep teeth clean. Coffee, tea, soda and red wine are all very acidic, which make your tooth enamel softer and more susceptible to staining. Berries and food with bright artificial colouring are also known to stain over time. Consume them in moderation and brush your teeth as soon as possible after consuming them, even if that means keeping a toothbrush and toothpaste at work.

When I got married three years ago, before I’d even picked a venue, I knew there was no way I could wear my hair loose. We’re all aware that very fine, shoulder length hair does not maketh the Kimmy K bride but what I didn’t know at the time is that my hair wasn’t even thick enough for the kind of up-styles I’d been lusting over in the pages of Wedding Journal.

I was dreaming of a full, messy bun, delicate braids, and a floral crown, so a trip to the hairdressers later and I had the option for any style I wanted on the wedding day, big bouncy curls for my hen party, and fab hair for the honeymoon Insta snaps; perfect!

Fast forward to now and I’d been missing the kind of length and fullness only hair extensions can bring so when I heard about Great Lengths Hair Extensions, I just had to try them!

We sat down with the fabulous MUA and boss lady Ciara Daly, to chat about all things bridal beauty and see if she would give us any top tips for our brides-to be!

So Ciara, with so many brands, products, artists and influences in the beauty industry, how can our lovely readers, narrow down their choice and decide on their bridal look?

‘Things such as their dress, hair, colour scheme and season will all totally influence a bride’s make-up look. But whatever form of glamour they pick, must do two things, one last all day long, lippy especially, and secondly look great in photographs.’

‘Traditionally, bridal make-up is soft, with natural tones and dewy skin, but if a smokey eye or red lip is more your thing, then definitely discuss this at your trial. If you’re unsure of what to go for, there’s plenty of inspo out there, from bridal magazines, such as Wedding Journal, to Pinterest.’

‘Don’t be scared to tear out looks, styles and images from magazines and online. This will give your artist a platform to work off of, and help both of you visualise the entire look a little better.’

Have you got any tips for brides-to-be who don’t necessarily have a go-to Make-Up Artist and are struggling where to start?

‘Many people don’t have an existing relationship with a make-up artist, so choosing the right one can be daunting, but it really isn’t! My best advice is to do your research and look for someone who has experience working with brides and with wider age ranges to ensure the make-up for your entire bridal party can be individually tailored to suit everyone.’

‘If you see photographs of a bride who looks fabulous, ask who did her make-up; a personal recommendation goes a long way!’

‘One other consideration is whether the MUA is familiar with different make-up brands and how to apply them, this gives a broader range to work with and helps achieve your desired results.’

Are make-up trails really necessary?

‘Oh for sure…as soon as you’ve selected your artist, book a couple of hours for a trial! This isn’t just about trying out different make-up styles, for me it’s a chance to get to know the bride a little better and find out what she wants to achieve and what she will be comfortable wearing.’

‘Remember to always let your MUA know if you are planning on changing anything before the big day, such as your hair colour or if you will be getting a spray tan.’

In terms of skin preparation, what advice do you give your clients in the build-up to the big day?

‘If you have problematic skin talk to a skincare specialist three or four months before the wedding as make-up will always look better on hydrated, exfoliated skin which is primed for application.’

As celebrity make-up artist Paddy McGurgan advises, ‘whether you are going it alone or hiring a make-up artist on the morning of your wedding, always ensure you have enlisted a tailored skincare routine in advance of your big day. The most common complaints I receive from brides about their skin particularly in winter is excessive dryness due to the drop in temperature! One product that will target this is Mario Badescu Honey Moisturiser, £15.

ALL BASES COVERED

Paddy also recommends, ‘For your wedding day, it is so important to look like YOU! Do not change your entire make up style, to look like some fairytale, it is all about looking like the best possible version of you! If you prefer a sheer or natural coverage in your day to day life, then keep this on your special day. My favourite foundation to use on brides on the morning of their wedding is Make Up Studio Face it Light Cream Foundation, £27.50.’

Pixi’s Global Director of Training & Artistry, Amanda Bell adds, ’My favourite way of achieving skin with a lustre or a beautifully polished finish is taking a liquid foundation and mixing a drop of facial oil into it (use the back of the hand as your palette and decant a 10p size of foundation and add 1 drop of oil – mix gently with your foundation brush and apply) this gives a beautiful soft focus glow/dewy finish to your foundation. Also using a primer with light reflective particles (one pump mixed with your base) looks incredible and gives a subtler radiance. I love customising the base to create a flawless and bespoke finish. I would recommend the Pixi Rose Oil Blend and Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer.’

‘If you love your coverage and contouring, then you will love Make up Forever Ultra HD Stick in Y505,’ advises Paddy. ‘As this is a cream based product it’s so important to always blend your edges, so that the contouring and shading does not look deep and heavy.

‘If you are conscious of your skin or have any raised pores or issues with your complexion, use Super Matte Loose Powder in Shade 14 (£32.50) down the centre of the face. It smooths out any imperfections whilst setting the make up in place for the day.

‘For a powder contour, it has to be Make up Studio Compact Earth Bronzing Powder in shade M3 (£23.75). This is the most buildable bronzer I have ever used and depending on how heavy I am with my brush and how much product I use, I could literally use this on every client. It’s so versatile and can create any look from a natural contour to a strong matte contour.’

THE EYES HAVE IT

According to celebrity make-up artist Ken Boylan, ‘Using colours on the eyes can really make the eyes pop, and a heavier black liner will make the eyes look bigger too. For the spring bride I used colour on the eyes, a mix of greens and pale gold shades to enhance the eye colour. I went all out with the liner here using it to full effect on Naomi’s green eyes. The black of the liner frames the eyes and give a much stronger look. This is great if you want to turn your day make-up in to a night make-up.

LIPS THAT WANT TO BE KISSED

Celebrity make-up artist, Christine Lucignano advises, ‘Skin prep prior to the big day is essential, and when having these facials/treatments don’t forget your lips! Ask your skin expert to concentrate on gentle exfoliation and hydration of the lips so you are ready to apply any chosen colour and formula and know that you will have staying power. Make sure you pick up a great lip treatment balm for your special day too as you will no doubt be kissing everyone you love. I recommend the holy grail of lip hydration Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream in either Original or in Scent Free as well as By Terry Baume de Rose Flaconnette Lip Protectant.

‘If you’re having a professional make-up artist on your wedding day I suggest trying a few lip shades when/if you have a make-up trial. Keep all of your make-up the same but try on a few different tones and intensities and take pictures in NATURAL DAY LIGHT so you can get an idea of what you want. Ultimately, it is the shade that girls care the most about so weather you need to reapply or not, make sure your happy with the colour. I also suggest having a day shade and an evening shade as you may want to increase the drama in evening light.

‘The ‘Finish’ and’ Coverage’ of a lipstick is quite important on your wedding day so educate yourself on the finishes/coverages available. Lipsticks  finishes –  stain, creamy, pearly, satin, heavy gloss/liquid, matte, heavy matte, etc. Lipstick coverage levels – sheer, medium, full, heavy etc. So even though you may like a lipstick that has some lasting power you can still get that with a Sheer Finish and a Sheer Coverage (YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain, Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy, Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Liquid Lip as well as Bourjois Rouge Laq Liquid Lip). Or you can opt for the other end of the spectrum in Full Matte Finish and Full Coverage (MAC Retro Matte, Nars Pure Matte, CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet, Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick and Two Faced Melted Mattes).

‘The market is packed with choices so don’t just rely on what a make-up artist has in her/his kit, get out there and start sampling now! Your ‘Wedding Day Pout’ is ALMOST as important as your dress, so do your research.’

Ireland’s ‘Go To’ Nail Technician, Pamela Laird, ‘It’s best to start your manicures a month or two before the big day. This gives you time to get the length to perfect the shape you want. On your wedding day, you want to look like the best version of YOU, not someone else. Really think about that, do you want to look back in a few years and think, why on God’s earth did I choose that look? Try not to be too swayed by family and friends, take into consideration, your dress, and the style of your wedding, but if you wear a black smokey eye every day, and on your wedding day have super natural make-up, you’re not going to look or feel like yourself, likewise, if you usually wear natural make-up, opting for a smokey eye on your big day may not be the best choice. Small details will often make your look YOU, so if you wear winged liner or a red lip every day, tell your artist at your trial so they can incorporate this into your wedding make-up.’

Give It Time: From the moment the ring goes on your finger it is time to start thinking about your skincare regime. Facial expert and skincare specialist Jennifer Rock from The Skin Nerd says, ‘You should start thinking about getting your skin in shape right away. Some brides we will see as early two years before the wedding day, but some will come in the last couple of months with specific problems as well.’

Start A Routine: There is no one size fits all so preparation really is the key. ‘Every bride is different and will require different care and a different regime. Some have a specific problem area which will need specific care and attention’ explains skincare expert Corinna Tolan from the Monica Tolan Clinic. ‘I’d definitely recommend the Youth EssentiA range from Environ Skincare. Prices start at €100 and it’s the fast pass range for healthy skin. Contains only premium-ingredients for the fastest route to skin health,’ reveals Corinna.  

Know Your Products: Facialist and skincare expert Jeanne Brophy stresses that you should go into skincare maintenance mode up to six months before your wedding day. ‘The biggest challenge is to get your homecare regime right. Take advice about the best products which suit your skin. One of the best products you can use for a healthy glow is a serum. These vary in price from €40 to €150 but you will find one that suits your budget and your skin type. My personal favourite which I call my bride serum is Skin Ceuticals Retexturing Activator (€88). Jeanne adds that the right regime makes all the difference and that a glowing healthy skin is better on the day than a skin that has had too much sun. ‘A tan can age the skin while glowing skin can be enhanced with the right make-up,’ she adds.

Work Inside Out: For better, brighter skin look at what you are putting into your body. You get out what you put in so increase your daily intake of water to help purify and cleanse the skin. ‘Inflammation starts from the inside. So nourish your skin from the inside out. Increasing your water on the run up to the big day is essential, as is decreasing your salt intake which can cause puffiness particularly around the eyes,’ warns Jennifer.

Supplement Your Skin: In addition to eating and drinking all the right things you might want to look at supplements such as omega-3 and fish oils. ‘Vitamin C and D and A all also great for increasing the freshness of the skins. It helps the skin look less grey and lack lustre,’ adds Corinna. Treat Yourself Right: ‘Make goals and stick to them,’ stresses Corinna. ‘It is a stressful time leading up to the wedding so you must look after your skin as much as possible.
