How soon should you shop for the suit?

Probably earlier than you think. While grooms have much more leeway than brides, you will want to start thinking about the kind of suit you’d like between six to nine months ahead of the big day, and start your shopping soon after.

Between three and five months is the time to get measured. Round up your best man and groomsmen, try everything on and arrange for any alternations that need to be made. Fittings will take between 45 minutes to one hour so make sure to book an appointment and give yourself plenty of time.

A-line

A-line is a classic style that has a fitted bodice, and a gently flared skirt – so-called because it resembles the shape of a capital letter A.

Ballgown

A true princess dresses, with a closely-fitted bodice that comes in at the waist and also immediately flares out into a very full skirt. 

Bateau or boatneck

A high-neck design that covers the chest, but has a gentle dip at the neck and the back.

Brocade

A heavy woven fabric with a raised floral or ribbon design that is best for winter weddings. 

Charmeuse

A lightweight fabric with a glossy, satin finish.

Chiffon

A lightweight, sheer fabric.

Column

Fitted down to the waist and hips, with a straight skirt that flows to the floor.

Crepe

A thin fabric with a crinkled texture.

Dupioni

A thick, shiny silken fabric that is popular for bridesmaids’ dresses. Shantung is a lighter version of this fabric.

Empire

Similar to a column, but the skirt falls from directly below the bust, similar to a maxi dress. 

English net

A softer, stretchier version of classic tulle netting.

Fit and flare

A fitted upper body and wide hem.

Georgette

A lightweight, slightly textured fabric that’s less shiny than many other bridal fabrics.

Halter

The straps of this neckline tie behind the neck, like a bikini top – looks best on girls with narrow shoulders and small to average size busts.

Illusion netting

This fabric is used in wedding gowns for the sheer overlays on backs and necklines, or sometimes to add sheer sleeves.

Off-the-shoulder

This style shows off the decolletage, collarbone and shoulders, with the straps or sleeves resting on the upper arm.

One-shoulder or asymmetric

This neckline is draped diagonally to leave one shoulder bare and one with a strap. 

Organza

A popular fabric for the skirts on gowns, as it’s stiffer and heavier than chiffon, meaning it hangs nicely.

Mermaid

Closely fitted and tight from the bodice, through the waist and hips and down to your knees, where the skirt flares out dramatically. 

Mikado

A type of silk which is thicker than other silk blends, such as chiffon, making it perfect for the bride who wants a structured gown that will hold its shape.

Satin

Satin is a very smooth, shiny fabric usually woven from silk or polyester.

Scoop

This neckline is like a semi-circle, dipping low over the chest. A scoop neck is perfect for balancing out a big skirt, but also looks beautiful when combined with a draped column skirt.

Silk

This is one of the most popular wedding dress fabrics, and is soft, smooth and shiny.

Square

A square neck reveals a similar amount of skin to the scoop neck, but is less circular and more squared off. Suits girls with large busts.

Sweetheart

One of the most popular and flattering necklines, the sweetheart neckline looks like the top part of a heart, with a V shape in the middle. Suits both small and large busts.

Taffeta

Taffeta is a thick, woven fabric that rustles when you move in it. Its stiffness is useful for voluminous skirts.

Trumpet

Similar to the mermaid style, but flares below the hip instead of the knee.

Tulle

This is a semi-sheer netting, often used for petticoats and bridal veils.

V-neck

This triangular neckline forms a V-shape on the chest – how deep it goes is up to you! Those that show the most cleavage are often called plunge necklines.

You might have been sketching out your dream wedding dress ever since you were knee-high, or you may have absolutely no idea what you’re going to wear on your wedding day.

And you may THINK you’re an experienced dress shopper – but let me tell you, finding your dream wedding dress is a whole other game!

There’s a world of terms you’ve probably never heard before – fit-and-flare, organza, mikado – and it’s more than likely going to be the most expensive item of clothing you will ever buy (at least, we hope so!).

 But don’t fret, we have you covered with everything you need to know before you hit the wedding stores!

Do your research

Wedding dresses can be heavy and cumbersome to try on, so narrow down the field before you go shopping by doing your research and figuring out what you like. Trawl through our wedding dress features, rip out pages, visit bridal boutiques online, check out what the celebrity brides are wearing and you’ll have a good idea of what’s out there and what appeals to you.

But don’t be too rigid

Bridal shop owners will always tell you that they see brides coming in with a preconceived idea of what they want in a gown, only to find it doesn’t suit them. Keep an open mind, listen to the bridal consultants and don’t rule things out too quickly – you could find the dress of your dreams when you least expect it!

Start early

It can take anywhere from four to 10 months for your wedding dress to be made, not to mention the added time if any alterations are needed, so you really need to buy your dress at least a year ahead of your wedding if possible. If you are able to avail of a rush service, be prepared to pay extra.

Work out your budget

First research the market and the cost of wedding dresses, then figure out what you’re willing to spend on a dress and don’t go over it. Make you know exactly where the money for your dress is coming from. If you do go over budget, you’ll have to sacrifice something else to meet the shortfall.

Include EVERYTHING

Don’t forget to factor in alterations, shoes, accessories, veil – and the cost of cleaning and preserving your dress afterwards – these things really add up!

Know what your wedding is going to be like

Is it a destination wedding in a hot, sunny country? You’ll need something lightweight that will be easy to take in your luggage and is comfortable in the heat. And decide if it’s going to be a relaxed garden wedding or a formal affair, church or no church – that will make a difference to the dress you choose and whether you decide to have a long train that sweeps the ground.

Research your bridal stores

Do your homework before you start making appointments, get recommendations from married friends and check out the brands they carry. And it’s also worth finding out if the shop has dresses in your size that you can try on. You really can’t decide if something looks good on you when it’s two sizes too small.

Bring the right people

You might have chosen six bridesmaids, but don’t bring them all dress shopping! Narrow it down to one or two people whose judgement you really trust and whose opinions matter to you.

Bring the right gear

Wear the undergarments you will be wearing on the big day (nude colour if poss!) – your dress will look completely different (and probably a lot better) when you’re wearing smoothing undies. You’ll also need to bring shoes in the same height that you’ll be wearing on the day.

Give yourself a full day to find your dream wedding dress

It takes AGES to put a wedding dress on and take it off, so don’t leave yourself so little time that you only get to look at three or four. 

Start cheap

Start off with the least expensive salons and work your way up – who knows, you could find your perfect gown for a fraction of the price of some of the others on offer.

Book ahead

If you’ve done a little groundwork beforehand, rather than walking in off the street, your bridal consultant will have a fair idea about your size and what you like, and can set aside some suitable gowns before you arrive.

Take photos of your dream wedding dress

Get your crew to take photos of you wearing every dress you really love – front and back. Then you’ll be able to sit down with a cool head afterwards and be realistic about whether that dress really was as flattering as you thought.

Ask about discount 

You might get a discount if you buy the veil, dress and accessories all in the one shop, so it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Save all the info securely

Once you’ve bought the dress, hang on to your paperwork in case you need to check the timeline and measurements, and keep a calendar with all the delivery dates so that you have plenty of time for extra fitting and alterations.

NEVER try on a dress that is way out of your budget

Either you’ll end up spending far more than you’d planning, putting a serious strain on your wedding budget, or you’ll fall in love with THAT gown and never have eyes for anything else.

Paris has finally revealed a full body shoot of what seems to be her main bridal look – a custom Oscar de la Renta gown featuring a high neck, long lace sleeves, and floral detailing.

The bottom half of the dress was crafted from a white tulle and scattered with embroidery. Paris finished the look with a dramatic cathedral-length veil.

Her makeup and hair were kept simple to emulate ‘timeless beauty’, hair stylist Eduardo Ponce told Vogue. “We wanted Paris to look fresh and chic. The dress is such a masterpiece we didn’t want to overdo the glam. We kept it clean and simple,” he says.

For her final reception look, Paris went for a crystal-embellished full-length dress with a plunging V-neckline. The showtopping gown designed by Pamella Roland, was finished with a dramatic diamante-encrusted cape that trailed the floor.

Hilton told Vogue she ‘loved’ her wedding look. “I wanted something that was timeless, elegant, chic, and iconic, and I am so happy,” she says.

The groom appeared to stay in the same suit throughout the evening. He wore a navy blue, silk single-breasted shawl lapel tuxedo which was custom-made by Italian fashion house Zegna.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart appears in a replica of one of the world’s most iconic wedding dresses in the first full trailer of Princess Diana biopic Spencer.

The actress sweeps through winter trees in the legendary Emanuel designed dress  in what may be a flashback or dream sequence in the acclaimed movie.

The original gown, which recently went on display in Kensington Palace, features a spectacular sequin-encrusted train, which at 25 feet filled the aisle of St Paul’s Cathedral and remains the longest in royal history.

Designed by the Emanuel studio, it features a scooped neckline and large puffed sleeves trimmed with bows and deep ruffles of taffeta, a style popularised by the Princess in the early 1980s, and the full skirt is supported upon a mountain of stiff net petticoats to create that famous silhouette. 

Fans are already obsessing over the style in the new movie as the late 80s and early 90s styles make a return including oversized collars, pearls and mid-length skirts.

The film, directed by Pablo Larrain, is set over a weekend in 1991, during a Christmas holiday in which Diana decides to end her marriage to Prince Charles.

In a recent interview, Stewart says she felt Princess Diana’s presence on set while filming the biopic, telling the LA Times: “ I felt some spooky, spiritual feelings making this movie. I felt like there were moments when I kind of got the sign-off.

“It’s scary to tell a story about someone who’s not alive anymore and who already felt so invaded. I never wanted to feel like we were invading anything, just that we were kind of adding to the multiplicity of a beautiful thing.”

The biopic is already receiving rave reviews from critics, with Stewart being hailed for her performance in the iconic role. 

She received a three-minute standing ovation during the premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and has been named by Variety as a possible Oscar contender.

In the dramatic new trailer, Diana arrives late for the festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate to endure three days with the extended royal family.

“Mummy, what’s happened to make you so sad?” a young Prince William asks. She responds: “Here, in this house, there is no future. Past and the present are the same thing.”

The trailer sees Prince Charles tell his wife: “There has to be two of you. There’s the real one, and the one they take pictures of.”

Stewart, as Diana, states: “There’s no hope for me. Not with them.”

Stewart performs alongside Jack Farthing as Prince Charles, Stella Gonet as the Queen, Timothy Spall as Equerry Major Gregory, and Sally Hawkins as Diana’s staff member and ally Maggie.

The official synopsis from production company NEON says: “The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold.

“Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game.

“But this year, things will be profoundly different. Spencer is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days.”

Style fans were wowed by the variety of outfits worn throughout the movie, including a beautiful white ball gown, yellow skirt suit and green plaid cardigan teamed with jeans.

Stewart revealed during a press conference that she was given information from royal insiders about the reality of Diana’s day-to-day life.

“The movie doesn’t offer any new information,” she said.

“It doesn’t profess to know anything. It imagines a feeling. I think my impression can only be my own. But Diana was a woman who wanted people to come together and I think that this movie’s ambition is to bridge gaps.”

Spencer is released in the US and UK on 5 November 2021.

Gwen Stefani tied the knot with country star Blake Shelton back in July 2021, but there’s no doubt she’s still basking in the bridal vibe (do you see what we did there?).

The triple Grammy Award-winning star has just shared a key part of the journey leading up to the wedding with her legions of fans – the moment she found her perfect dress.

The former No Doubt singer (51) shared throwback videos of herself trying on the stunning Vera Wang wedding dress she wore for her wedding to Blake Shelton (45), adding the caption ‘The moment I said yes to the dress.”

In the videos, Gwen showed off the custom lily-white silk georgette gown with a sweetheart plunging neckline, revealing in a hashtag that it was the second dress she had tried on.

The Voice US judge then modelled the cut-away back, fitted bodice and hand tumbled tulle skirt, teamed with white stiletto cowboy boots by Le Silla and long veil and gold necklaces featuring her and Shelton’s last names.

After selecting the Vera Wang dress that she wore to the ceremony at the wedding chapel built on their Oklahoma ranch, Stefani also picked out a second, shorter version of the dress for the reception, adding on Instagram: “You need a party dress when u get to marry @blakeshelton.”

The Vera Wang Instagram account revealed that the chapel length veil was hand embroidered with the names of Gwen and Blake, along with those of Gwen’s sons, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo.

“For the reception she chose a custom lily white Italian silk crepe and hand tumbled tulle strapless mini dress with hand pieced silk, crystal and sequin embroidered foliage delicately trickling from the waist down the skirt,” Vera Wang said in an Instagram post.

“The embroidery is highlighted by a pair of hand sewn love birds symbolizing the couple. They are joined by three baby love birds representing Gwen’s children.”

Gwen later preserved her wedding gown and flowers in a box, telling Wang in a video that “it was literally a dream come true to be able to work with you and get married to Blake in your gown.”

After six years as a couple, Gwen and Blake tied the knot at the country singer’s Oklahoma ranch in a wedding chapel that was specially built for the occasion.

Blake and Gwen met on the set of The Voice in 2015 – Gwen had joined the show in 2014 and began coaching alongside Blake, but it wasn’t until next summer when both were going through divorces (Blake to Miranda Lambert, and Gwen to Bush star Gavin Rossdale) that they grew closer.

In July 2016, Blake and his then wife, Miranda Lambert announced that they were divorcing after almost a decade as partners.

The 36-year-old then switched into a stunning Vivienne Westwood gown for the second half of the day. The floor-length dress featured a strapless neckline with tiered skirt and a bow at the back.

She also changed her hairstyle, undoing her hair from the ceremony’s intricate updo and wearing it in glamorous waves.

The TV star later danced to Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams with her husband, resplendent in a see-through lace outfit combined with a white swimsuit with ‘Just Married’ at the back.

“We went to take a photo together and there he was on one knee,” Lucy said.
